Passionate about freedom, libre software/hardware, environmental sustainability, and doing the right thing even when it's inconvenient.

  • True, I suspect that the lack of properly spicy options from major/national food establishments has to do with fear of litigation, or risk management for customers who want to be macho but can't eat the food and ultimately request refunds. Taco Bell had previously come out with a ghost pepper sauce that, while not "hot" compared to the actual pepper, it did have a noticeable heat profile compared to, say, "fire" which IMHO has good flavor but has only a slightly noticeable heat profile at best.

  • This issue always baffles me.

The amazing thing about owning a penis is that I can still pee sitting down and there's never any drama. Have to poop? Don't even have to move! Have to fart? Go for it! Not farting in your underwear makes them smell fresher for longer, anyway.

  • Героям слава!

  • Unpopular opinion: profanity is massively overhyped and people that excessively swear tend to irk me. There are so many ways to passionately express emotion, at least in the English language, yet so many are fascinated with only a few. The word "fuck" in particular loses all gravitas after hearing it 150 times a day for most of my life. I've had to stop watching certain shows because swearing felt so excessively forced to perhaps come across as edgy, and it broke all immersion for me.

  • There are alternatives to Google and Apple products. I recommend the MNT Pocket Reform if you'd like a full keyboard, or a Librem 5 if you prefer a more typical smartphone form factor.

  • I suppose, but... coming from the world of GC Impreza coupes (where the doors are very long - similar in length to F-body Camaros and whatnot) and even NC Miatas, I think this driver just has main character syndrome. The empty spaces nearby may have not been empty when the other car arrived, and people just frankly don't think about things as much as we may think they do.

  • I never noticed how modest my childhood lifestyle was until my 1st grade teacher asked the class what we all did for vacation during the school break. I worked on a ranch or stayed home playing with secondhand toys. I remember thinking "wait... is this what people do? How?" I remember missing out on many opportunities as a child (travel, sports, restaurants, etc) due to finances, but still don't consider it being a "poor" upbringing overall. My parents did the best they could with what they had, and I think having limited opportunities actually helped me be more creative with my time.

Anyway, back to the point... when we had them available sometime after getting a microwave, I ate hot dogs like this periodically in elementary school through college.

  • 1st amendment of the U.S. Constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

  • From my experience, rushing the front of a plane during deplaning is common in Asia. I noticed it the most in Thailand, China, and India, but I've admittedly only had a few travels there. I've asked a few Asian natives about this trend, and the general consensus so far seems to be that, especially for China and India, there is a sense of "everyone for themselves" due to the sheer population density in many areas. If you don't push forward, you won't make it onto a crowded train.

I have seen much less of this in Europe and North America, except for the occasional eager individuals or small group. In those cases, I haven't noticed any perceivable pattern in ethnicity. If I had to pick out a trait that comes to mind, I most often notice it in younger men. It could be confirmation bias, though.

  • My theory is that people who often have dirty glasses have likely worn glasses for most of their lives, because neuroplasticity has kicked in and they don't notice the smudges until it gets exceptionally bad.

  • Disable suspend when the laptop lid is closed:

     bash

    sudo sed -i 's/#HandleLidSwitch=suspend/HandleLidSwitch=ignore/g' /etc/systemd/logind.conf
    sudo sed -i 's/#HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=suspend/HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=ignore/g' /etc/systemd/logind.conf
    sudo systemctl restart systemd-logind

If you are in a TTY, you can blank the screen before closing the lid to prevent burn-in. After running this, come back later and press a key to turn the screen on again.

    alias blankscreen='setterm --blank=force; read ans; setterm --blank=poke'

  • As of early-2000s, both novels were required reading in my high school central Texas curriculum.

  • Hey, that's good marketing. It grabs attention and we're talking about it.

  • I'm staying with my boyfriend because of his dog. Am I horrible?

Is there a Parisian who doesn't do rock climbing, Pilates, or ceramics?

I'm going to the Maldives but I'm composting, does that make up for it?

Just between you and me, who's ever bought fruit on the metro?

So, what do we do with the people on the wrong side of the escalator?

Has anyone ever found the exit at Chatelet, or is that a myth?

  • This flood was devastating to the area. It is also quite shocking to look up at the aftermath and see dead animals in the canopies of trees. My family owns a ranch that was fortunately far south enough to only be indirectly affected by the flood. We worked all weekend to clear debris from fences and swing gates and, thankfully, did not see any corpses in the water.

    Death toll update:

More than 100 people people have died after devastating floods hit central Texas. Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp that sits along the Guadalupe River, has confirmed that 27 campers and counselors died in weekend floods. Ten campers and one counselor are still unaccounted for.

And those at Camp Mystic did their very best to save the girls, even at the cost of their own lives:

Camp Mystic owner Dick Eastland died while trying to rescue campers during the catastrophic flooding in Kerr County, Texas, as shared by his grandson in an Instagram tribute on Saturday.

“If he wasn’t going to die of natural causes, this was the only other way—saving the girls that he so loved and cared for,” George Eastland wrote. “That’s the kind of man my grandfather was. He was a husband, father, grandfather, and a mentor to thousands of young women. Although he no longer walks this earth, his impact will never fade in the lives he touched.”

A Camp Mystic employee, Glenn Juenke, told CNN Eastland died “remaining a true hero until the very end.”

“Eastland tragically lost his life while courageously attempting to save several young children,” Juenke said.
