  • Oh yeah, absolutely agree. But I was utterly maliciously compliant in getting my guys their pay increases and bonuses.

    I would love it if unions entered my workplace but we're far to complex and technical. Not to mention in my industry we go through a good 2-3 restructures a year (yeah I know it's bat shit insane)

    In lieu of a union I made it my personal aim to get all my under paid employee bumped to much higher pays. Which was a problem because my team generally only took on existing employees who showed aptitude for technical and complex stuff.

    In returned they got a detailed and complex training on everything from sql, to parsecing very large amounts of data, to building complex mappings and results.

    Under older management they were often left on their previous pay. I found that really fucking disgusting so I made sure to build a rating system that fairly rated them but made sure that rated/scored/reviewed work automatically ended up on their end of year statement. It was all built using MS stuff. It was cool. I could go in, score their work, it graded them, weighed for complex vs simplex (and different roles) generating a single score. I could do it all year around so if something flag I could easily raise it in our catch ups. I had 3 teams across the entire country (I did a lot of travelling so I could meet my guys and hang, coffee, beers, lunch etc)

    It basically meant that everything was documented and very fucking detailed, and because they were meeting the straight forward no sneaky lawyer trick KPIs it meant they were able to smash it.

    So at EOY where we did peer review the other managers tried to shoot down my ratings for my guys (which gave them 10% bumps and hit their STI (approx $2-4k bonus) however kept coming up against the documentation.

    It should be the number one goal for any manager to make it realistic and possible for their guys to get their bonus and pay raises.

    Coz a happy team is a good fucking team. As a direct result of this effort we solved over 99% of all the work on our ledger by EOY.

    If anything we were a little too successful. But that's story for another day.

  • Fun fact: I had a career in which I was in charge of hiring other people to fill the expanding roles in my department, and was tasked with hiring ‘more of myself’, but I was not allowed to even consider people with my own qualifications.

    I had a similar problem. Writing JDs for new roles I had to fill I was constantly getting them knocked back by HR.

    Finally HR called me and explained that for what the job entitled we couldn't possibly pay the market price for it.

    I was like but that's the job. Shit I thought I had made the JDs pretty succinct and austere already.

    Nup apparently we'd be paying upward for $100k for a job the guys in team were only getting $60k.

    As you can imagine we got a lot of applications but 90% weren't even close to what we needed.

    I was mostly self-taught, and was only allowed to consider people with at least a bachelor’s degree in a field that didn’t even really exist yet.

    Same.

    I personally don't like hiring uni graduates. Their utterly lost and difficult to motivate. And almost always what they learned in university does not help whatsoever in the role. Especially dev roles.

    For the work I'm involved in there a lot of exception handling. Solving the bugs and looking at the relationship between the stacks. It's more of a puzzle.

    They signalled to the voters they weren't holding them back. Indeed a great part of the slaughter happened under Biden watch.

    If Trump wasn't around that alone would have ended Biden relection attempts.

    The democrats did everything they could to find the worst postion on every single issue.

    So yes I blame them when it should have been a fucking shoe in. They allowed the fascist to come to power due to their milquetoast acquiescence to their corporate and dark money benefactors.

    Not to the people. They had sold out workers rights to the point where unions were bleeding out. And when a conman fascists came up claiming he would make it all better they had no way to tell people to stay the course with the democrats when the evidence was clear. Wages going down, workers rights in the fucking sewer, health issuance, housing and education across the country all trending down.

    It was desperation of millions that they could neither voter for the democrats nor Trump. Which along with the republican cheating allowed them to secure the win.

    And the democrat leadership is utterly lacking accountability for what they did.

    Schumer, Jefferies, Pelosi, Harris, Buttigirg all knew the president was fucking senile and sick. He shouldn't have been in power much less running a relection campaign.

    How they have not resigned for such a massive breach of trust is beyond me. It's fucking criminal.

    And worse not pursing trump and putting him prison. Fuck me. They had every opportunity. Jesus, the man is a walking indictment. They had over 3 million files and 15 TB of videos which we know contain Trump and yet they did nothing!!

    And now they won't even declare a general fucking strike.

    How many more people must end up in concentration camps before they oppose Trump with everything they got????

    I remember Outlook backups failing like nothing else during the restore process 25 years ago.

    Which was fucked because it would take 2 weeks to rebuild only to find out it didn't work.

    They realised that it was going to be a complete flop so they got the rights to Heinlein's worst book (and in the lead for worst scifi of all time) and gave it to Verhoeven to mangle onto the already shot Bug Hunt at Outpost 7.

    Even Verhoeven agreed with me giving up on reading the book half way through it because it was so fucking awful. Both from a glorifying the fuck out of the fascists and because it was singularly one of the worst written books of all time whilst being completely and utterly self-serving.

    Heinlein had big daddy issues and they come flooding through the book in a huge way. Notwithstanding the ridiculously broken plot about how his Filipino dad kicks Johnny out because he joined the military, before getting officer training (basically coz everyone dies and his the bottom of the barrel) before his home city of Manila is destroyed, but not before his dad joins and ends up a sergeant in Johnny's platoon, begging his sons forgiveness.

    If you know Filipinos this is the absolutely last thing a Filipino father would ever do. They would walk on glass, render their limbs from their body before ever admitting, to their sons no less, any fault.

    Fuck I hated that book like I've hated no book. The never ending slaughter, the killing of civilians (albeit aliens), the absolutely shit prose and dialogue, the boring as fuck plot. The absolute hard on for fascism. The pages and pages dedicated to shitting on civilians and sucking off the military. I have read hundreds of, probably thousands of scifi novels, shit I've read phone books that were more interesting then starship troopers.

    I cannot believe that Heinlein wrote the book as some sort of dystopian allegory.

    Verhoeven subverted the subtext and showed how insane a fascist government would be in the case of interstellar war.

    When I was growing up getting shit to run on my 286 was a challenge, Changing memory allocations, IRQ ports, a myriad of errors and work arounds, cfg files, memory editing, command lines, basic, and all that stuff meant you were forced to think.
