Life is a dream

And the world is a stage

I'm stuck in hell without any ice cream

Welp, it's time to rage

  • No, I doubt any instance is gonna allow to say things like the n-word or "I don't think people that are [Race/Ethnicity] should be allowed to exist".

Any instance that allows you to say that should be defederated.

Can you claify what you mean by "free speech"? Give a few example comments?

  • If a civil war happens, you want your neighbors to be less... fascist.

Go to big cities. I'm Chinese-American and I personallt wouldn't step foot in a red state, and I'd think twice before travelling through red areas even within blue/purple states. Make sure your vehicles are good, and travel early in the day, don't get stuck in some rural town on the side of the highway because your method of transportation break down.

I always had this self-imposed rule even before 2025, but especially now.

Its not paranoid, it's being realistic.

I'm in Philly and it's quite blue here. Never seen any nazi flags, swastica armbands, whitehoods, or any crazy shit like that around here. It's like at least 40% Black, 35% Whites and there's like 15% Asian in my neighborhood. Not the best place ever, feels kinda like a "slum" here tbh, but I feel safer here than those white neighborhoods with all the crazy kkk/nazis.

Honestly, when you look at the election stats, its more blue than even NYC, that's known for being a Democraric stronghold. Philly is in a swing state, so your votes matter more here (hopefully elections will continue to exist).

NYC housing is unaffordable, which is why my parents moved here (and since I was a kid, I had no choice anyways). Philly housing is much cheaper, but be warned, there are a lot of lead issues here. Inspect for lead before you move in. (My parents didn't even do the inspections and just YOLO'd it 🤦‍♂️)

  • I'm not sure what you want me to elaborate on.

PRC does not have a free/socialized healthcare system. There are some government workers who have insurance. My aunts are teachers and I think they have an insurance plan provided by their employment. Before immigrating to the US, my mother worked in sales, and my dad was either a taxi driver or a truck driver or something like that, and they did not have health insurance.

So its just out of pocket, just like in the US.

  • This is how it looks like:

Biden: "I need y'all to execute the traitor Donald J. Trump"

Military: "I'm sorry Mr. President, I'm afraid we cannot do that."

Trump: "I need y'all to round up these democrat [n-word] thugs"

Military: "Can we just shoot them?"

  • I also didn't like it the first watch. Then a few years later I ran out of stuff to watch and tried again. It's very confusing on who the "bad guys" are until season 2. I just google some minor spoilers and about the "bad guys" and it was enough for me to continue on watching.

Season 1, nothing really happens, it feels more like a prequel. Season 2 is when shit really begins.

  • TV, Movies, distracting entertainment.

Writing poetry, worldbuilding and write stories in it.

My favorite Youtuber is Jacksepticeye. Vey wholesome, very funny, no weirdness like the other ones. Always have a progressive view on the world. Like you can feel it when he talks about stuff.

I re-watch his old videos to feel the nostalgia.

I don't have anyone to talk to either, but when ever I hear or read about other's struggles, on wikipedia, new stories, videos, forum posts, I feel as though I talking to a friend and sharing our struggles. It give you perspective, it make you feel less lonely, knowing that you are not alone, other share similar struggles.

  • I mean, the Orville is more like a comedy, not everyone is into that.

Have you watched The Expanse? That's more of what more realistic space sci-fi looks like.

Also: For All Mankind, depicting an alternate space race where the Soviets won the race to the moon, and the space race didn't end, and continued on, base on moon, maybe even expanding further into the solar system (no spoilers, you'll have to watch).

  • Mr. Robot

Feels too dark. Drugs, depression, dystopia, alter egos?

Feels like I'm watching some conspiracy theory documentary, way to dark.

Succession, its just rich people doing rich people things. So much boring family drama.

The Wire. I stop watching because too much corrupt cop moments that triggers PTSD.

    Stanger Things. The part where

Didn't finish Lost. Like WTF dude, a fucking

The Walking Dead, the story is boring and dragged on too long and I lost interest.

Probably a lot more boring TV, but probably too boring for me to even remember.

If you learn a language from birth, then later on learn another language, then lose proficiency in the first language. Which one is your: Native Language? "First" Language?

So I was thinking about the topic of languages again and I started wondering again...

So I learned Cantonese as a kid, then learned Mandarin and the Chinese Writing system when I started school, in China. Then immigrated to the US, started learning English when I was still under age 10, which is according to wikipedia, still within the "critical period" of learning a language

There is much debate over the timing of the critical period with respect to second-language acquisition (SLA), with estimates ranging between 2 and 13 years of age.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_period_hypothesis

So then, I um... kinda forgot how to speak Mandarin, and most of Chinese written characters. Still kinda speak Cantonese because its for home. But barely know any words, so I can't even express complex ideas like philosophy, science, politics. I never really spoke to anyone in Mandadin, and for Cantonese, its only at home.

But I never actually learned Cantonese or Mandarin beyond the basics

Couldn't someone living near a border just go over and buy stuff and skip the tariffs?

I mean, say, you want a really nice camera, or a drone, or maybe a gaming laptop, and since those things are made in China, they are too expensive to buy right now in the US, since tariffs are over 100%. So you just go to Canada, buy the thing, unpack it from the packaging, and pretend like its just personal items. Just like a smartphone.

AFIAK, border agents usually don't ask if you bought your phone in the US or from outside, they shouldn't ask about other personal electronics, right?

This feels very confusing. Sombody from lemmy.ml is gonna reply to me not knowing they are defeded.

I think there should be a label telling users from lemmy.ml saying "This user's instance has defederated your instance".

If society goes cashless, you might be forced to carry a smartphone in order to get food. This could mean the end of privacy. What your thoughs on this?

I'm pretty sure, stuff like Graphene OS wouldn't work with whatever payment systems they set up. So you'd be forced to have a mainstream phone and OS to have the app to use money. They could have all sorts of tracking on it.

If they make IDs digital, and make carrying IDs mandatory, that'd basically seal out fate. Every movement will be tracked...

(Is this too "deep" to be on "casual" conversation?)
