  • I understand having a dislike for a medium that encourages shallow, gimmicky, reactive content

    That's all social media.

And Reddit has a huge amount of reposting/karmafarming bots as well as a lot of political/troll botfarms targetting it, and a lot of human trolls. And if you don't have an adblocker, a sometimes miserable user experience. But Reddit also has the biggest userbase by a huge factor, a lot of really interesting subs with some really good content and people.

You can find positives and negatives about any platform or, really, anything anywhere. At least with social media platforms we have a choice as to whether we engage or not. That's how you avoid the trash if you think the pool is full of shit - don't swim in it.

Honestly, if someone genuinely believes "everything is shit" then maybe the problem is with them.

  • That's like saying "I read a book once that I didn't like, so all books are shit"

Tiktok is like all other streams - there's a huge variety of content and it includes a lot of good and innovative creators. Yes, there's a lot of utter shite, just lke reddit, facebook and even Lemmy.

But there's also people who spend time making something good, sharing interesting things about their day and teaching what they know.

  • Ah, so that's why he's in Trump's crony list and lined up to take control of Gaza?

  • Throw a dead cat on the table.

  • Has the government issued a statement about this?

It sounds... very odd, and I'm interested in knowing the reasons for apparently breaking the law, especially in what seems to be a clumsy and legally difficult way. What did they hope to achieve? I note from the Guardian's article that Ansari has already started legal proceedings against the home secretary and the chief constable of north Wales police.

  • Some would consider asking vague questions without context to be inappropriate.

  • You know for a fact that the people doing the largest share of the recovery effort have nothing to do with the decision to have no backups.

Exactly. How they got there is no consolation to those dealing with it now.

  • As a sysadmin that's pretty much my worst nightmare. I really feel for those trying to pick the pieces back up again after that.

  • What is Bob good at? Is any of his skill set useful to the team as a whole? If not, to the department? Then to the company? A sideway move might help everyone.

You say you've tried to train him, but has anyone else? Sometimes two people just don't click enough to learn/teach together through no fault of either.

Ultimately, if nothing you think of can help, then you need to talk to HR and work with them about a performance improvement plan.

Re-reading your message, it seems you're not his manager. In which case this isn't your job. If he is affecting your ability to do your own job, then you need to talk to your manager.

  • Ask for specific examples of where you failed to deliver work as per your contract.

  • Username checks out.

  • I've recently done almost exactly this, although I used an ESP8266 running esphome. That powers two 120mm fans that have various speed settings (including 0 rpm via PWM) depending on both the power state of various devices in the cupboard where it's housed, as well as temperature. All speeds and controls are exposed to linux via the Home Assitant API, and of course that has its own alerts and dashboards. I wanted to run this fully independently of the machines its cooling.

Not worth pursuing if you don't already have an HA install, but if you do then perhaps worth a thought of a different approach.

  • I'd probably cut it off.

  • So, uh, are any of these ministers personally benefitting from the UK's sale of arms to Israel?

  • Then it’s the drive, probably. If not did you check the cable (most likely culprit),

I'm a pretty experienced pc guy, but I got that wrong this week.

I'd re-used a SSD drive gave classic disk failures for writing cctv images to in a server. It's one I'd had similar issues with years before, so didn't spend much time diagnosing before switching it out for another. I then physically cut up the SSD before disposing.

Next day - replacement drive gave identical errors.

Yep - of course, it was the Sata cable. Swapped that and everything's fine again.

I'm miffed that I binned a (most likely) perfectly good SSD.

  • Sounds good; known branded equipment is more likely to be compliant - but do check, it's usually pretty clearly marked on packaging and listings.

  • Good answer.

Just chipping in to point out that there are a LOT of products listed as "POE" that don't comply with any official standard, and are just designed as a single pair for lower end devices. So to echo your advice, do check for standards before buying.

  • That's a really good article and shows how one person with a strong motivation can actually make a different through identifying a need and then working to solve it.

I found the technical aspects and reasoning interesting too, and your comments. Hard to disagree with any of them. I spent some time playing with the egui demo also - quite an impressive featureset.

Thanks for posting. Made me think.

  • 25 years ago I got into playing Unreal Tournament.

I still talk daily with some of the people from that community across several countries. We've never met, never will, but we've shared stuff that our real families don't know.
