  • It takes a huge shift in the US. There's a stigma that if you don't get new youre "a poor". The funniest part is, the poorest people i know have a hatred for the poor. Like dude, you are 1 paycheck from being homeless but yes the homeless person is your issue not the tech billionaires.

Anyway, my mindset is the opposite in that im more disgusted by new and feel much happier with repair and reuse. But thats very rare. Not to mention late stage capitalism has made a lot of new stuff shit compared to old (cars, appliances, houses, consoles that don't require Spyware and accounts to even play a single player offline game etc)

  • sigh

  • I agree with you. You have my vote!

And yes, a lot of people tend to ignore that the crap jobs that need to be done wont get done without monetary incentive. So im glad you mentioned that point

  • sigh

  • Good argument. Your statement solves all our issues. How can people not see this isn't a black and white issue? It can however be put simply:

    Billionaires shouldn't exist.

Everyone deserves a living wage (NOT access to all life's luxuries)

If you feel like busting your ass working or saving money, you should be ABLE to afford the luxuries you want.

  • sigh

  • I do like it on occasion yes, and those workers deserve a living wage. They don't deserve the luxuries of life that a doctor has, however.

Id agree the "hardness" of a job is difficult to quantify. A job where you sit at a computer all day but talk to people and run large projects to build houses or factories or anything like that, will pay more than a fast food person. They both are working, but it's different. Could the fast food employee design an electrical system for a food facility ? No. Could the electrical engineer work fast food? Almost definitely yes.

  • sigh

  • Interesting take. I don't believe it's an all or nothing question. But I think we can all agree that a lazy-by-choice person doesnt deserve as much as someone who went to school for 6 years to be a doctor. Now.the lazy person doesn't deserve prison or to be homeless. But if you think both people need to live in a 1 bedroom apartment for things to be equal, thats actually oppression, not equality.

Good open source private calendar? Or is samsung ok (x doubt)

So trying to get rid of all the g00gle I can. Realized the Samsung calendar is unfortunately really good with nice features. But I am sure it's not private at all. Any good recommendations ? I share calendars with others too which may be an issue.

    Everything web based

What's your guys general thought on how everything is web based now? For me, I don't really like it. I would just rather have an actual program that runs. But I am merely a user, not a programmer.

Does anyone truly think times are better now than 30 years ago? (US)

I really never have believed times improved, and i am almost positive things will only get worse.

30 years ago we had a future to look to, the unshittified internet, great music, affordable land/housing, affordable durable cars, people actually interacted in real life, no social media trash. Now, we have billionaires and LLMs. I don't see how anyone can possibly think times are better or going to improve.

Yes, everyone will say "civil rights improved" and yes thats maybe the only thing that has changed, however it's getting taken away every day again so I don't think you can even use that point anymore.

What tools do we need in our arsenal to defend against slop?

I've seen some sites/programs mentioned before for this, but thought it may be good to have a solid list.

What tools do we have today to identify slop, whether it's video, audio, text etc.? I know right now most of us can identify it just because it's off or feels wrong in some way, but we are going to need better tools in the future to be able to truly tell. Also bonus if it's an offline tool.

The shoehorning of llms into business use is just laziness.

This is what drives me nuts. It's pure laziness that drives this shit.

You know what would actually improve productivity? Allowing use of ad blockers so I can study work related content or instructional videos without a million ads. An email client that isn't a piece of shit like outlook. A chat program that is not the horrendous teams. A cloud storage solution that is not one drive. Everything I've mentioned could/would be improved by open source implementation, but they think throwing an llm at it will improve productivity. Its just laziness. AND the fact that millions are spent on a business llm account per year is utterly stupid. I've not seen one scenario at our work where an llm has actually improved productivity. Sure, maybe some have used it for fixing bad grammar or writing an email they were too lazy to come up with, but to me if you are that dumb or lazy, you don't deserve a good job.

To add. I've actually tried using the llm for certain things, and it maybe helped 5% of

Its likely a very large percentage of people would choose to have been born earlier than they were if given the choice.

Not like 1912, but say 1979 instead of 2003 for a gen z. Now, if you would retain the knowledge you have now or not, thats up to the genie.

What nerd terms should one know while on lemmy?

Things we see all the time, but no one can really describe, like

    Docker

    Federated

    Self host

    Fork

    Container

    Instance

    Flatpak

    Tailscale

    Distro

    Wayland

    Nginx

    Etc.

Sure we can search but the terms are just so abstract I can't understand some of it.

    Something I noticed

Something from work I noticed today that will unfortunately become the norm.

If you gibbity an answer, you're regarded as smarter than someone who searched it. The funny part is I've actually given it a try, and it's wrong so often that it actually wastes my time. And, if it's right and I don't agree, I can say it's wrong, and with a 98% confidence level it changes the answer.

Side note, this is exactly why the fascist tech bros are pushing hard to shove this tech down our throats.

Having to search to do everything..

Not that I don't still love using linux daily, but it is getting a little old having to search for how to do anything even just install a simple program (recently, had a. Deb file to install unifi software that wouldn't install and had to find a custom script to do it).

I feel like there's no way I'd ever learn all the random commands I've been copying and pasting (and keeping in a text file for later) and can't help but feel it's kind of clunky. And I don't feel like I really know anything of what Im doing. Even man pages baffle me. I've been into computing for 20 years but only used linux a little like 8 years ago, but now it's been my main os on my desktops for probably 2 months. I know, maybe that's just not long enough. I just don't like the fact that if I couldn't search, I'd be completely stuck on a lot of tasks.

It it more common for us to love physical media?

Wondering if this is common with ADHD. maybe not only physical media but just things in general. I for one am not a fan that everything is digital and nonexistent so make it a point to own media I care about on physical copies.

Has anyone's job been asking them to utilize LLM's?

My work thinks theyre being forward thinking by shoving ai into everything. Not that we are forced to use it but we are encouraged to. Outside of using it to convert a screenshot to text (not even ai...thats just ocr) I haven't had much use for it since it's wrong a lot. Its pretty useless for the type of one off work I do as well. We are supposed to share any "wins" we've had but I'd sooner they stop paying a huge subscription to Sammy A.

What do you even do at a gym?

First off I have no clothes you'd ever wear to a gym. I wear jeans and a t shirt pretty much daily (think Hank Hill). Second, I don't get what you do there. I hated gym time in school (workout gym, not like throwing balls and running around gym, thats fun) and I don't get what you do. Run on a treadmill and lift some weights? I feel like I could do all of that at home. Gym memberships are insanely expensive. Are home workouts actually effective? Does one even enjoy gym time?

    Your favorite learning resource for...Windows

No, im not trolling lemmy users..

So in looking for jobs, I do see a lot of them require windows server experience. I've been immersing myself fully in linux learning but figure that is kind of useless for me since a ton of places also use windows for networking.

Will many of the skills transfer? Are there specific large differences to watch for? Also, can one even mess with windows server since it's expensive and enterprise only?

I hand draw lines in CAD for design. What crazily outdated stuff do you do for work that seems hilarious ?

I've always thought this method was hilarious, but it's a very specific type of work that requires it. There's not much automation to be done since it's different every time. I also had a previous job where some days you'd have to count product in boxes all day long, and hand write the numbers (this was about 3 years ago).

What outdated things at your work do you find amusing?

I found this thought funny. A few years ago everyone was all learn to code so you don't lose your job! Now there wont be any programming jobs in 10 years. But we will need a lot of manual labor still.

Anyone else kind of disgusted at the waste created by going out to eat?

I could have titled this as just waste created by living daily, but wanted to focus it down a little more. I feel kind of like im the crazy one that sees this insane waste when eating at restaurants, wrappers, cups, drink carriers going right in the trash, billions per day. Its insanity if you think about it.

I've at least been never using cup lids or straws and never taking drink carriers when theyre offered (what a massive waste of cardboard!). Then most of the waste is at least paper from the bag and wrapper. Still not great. And yes, I know the solution would be "cook at home!" But that also wastes a lot of freshwater from dish washing, and sometimes it's just nice to eat somewhere else.

I wonder if this is just something you notice as you get older. Then again older peiple probably waste the most, but I'm just guessing.

PSA: VLC is awesome for radio and podcast streaming too!

After using VLC for over 15 years, I decided to explore a little more. I had no clue that it comes with thousands of internet radio stations on Icecast, as well as the ability to add all your podcasts into it (just need to find the link to your podcasts hosting service). I no longer use any streaming services (to me, they are criminal, plus they're full of ads and generally getting worse and more expensive every day)

Just wanted to let anyone know who may not know how much VLC can do!

    Github- I don't get it!

I feel super dumb asking this. But what actually is and how does github (or similar sites) work? Are they all just source files one needs to manually compile? I am always confused when I look at a github page. I know some have directions but they still go way over my head sometimes. Im not a total noob but some of this stuff seems like you need to be in programming and have an IDE just to run a program.

Is moderately severe back pain really normal at 30?

I know it's a joke " oh haha you're 30, everything hurts now cuz you're so old!" But really, is something wrong with me or are backs just this stupid? Not overweight. Decently active although I don't exersize every single day. No genetic issues, doctor always says im in perfect health. But my lower back will randomly act up, sometimes it gets so bad that I about black out from the pain. Thats pretty rare though, usually it's just an ache all day when I move or try to put my socks on. Its not sciatica, as I never feel numbness or pain in my legs. Mild weakness maybe if it hurts really bad.

I feel like any doctor is just going to say welp, you're old it happens, or tell me I need 3.5 million dollar spinal surgery.
