    Personally I do buy stuff from amazon on occasion. Like windshield wipers of odd sizes. But the lack of two day shipping is a good moderator to help me curb my american programmed buy-fucking-everything-to-fill-that-hole-inside mentality.

  • Yeah that's the case with programming.... well anything. This at least gives you a way to automatically receive all of that data from any app without excessive prior knowledge. With a small amount of info you can filter for specific events and create all kinds of robust functionality. That's the power of a set protocol - it is to make things widely compatible with one another by only depending on the dbus protocol and app name. Otherwise you may need to depend on some shared objects which makes deployment and maintenance a total clusterfuck.

  • I used to love Thinkpad laptops up until Lenovo bought the line - build quality dropped off a cliff after that. I've avoided them since then so I can't comment on their current build qualities except to say they used to be built stronger than those toughbooks with handles.

  • I really wish there was some form of individual copyright that could be sold for specific media. I buy a song on itunes - I own a limited license to listen to that song so long as iTunes may serve it. If I was smart enough to download it to my device, then I might hold onto it a few moments longer in spite of Apple losing the copyright and denying me the ability to listen again on devices without the download. Sucks for me right?

    What if I could buy a limited copyright? One that is strictly tied to my individual person and that specific media I had purchased. That copyright is nontransferable, but it is platform agnostic. I could then use that legal copyright to view or listen to that media on a streaming or distribution platform of my choosing. I could listen to a song on Spotify, or Pandora, or Apple, or Google, and I only had to buy it once. Those platforms would not need to negotiate copyright access for media, only demonstrate the ability to serve that media and limit access to those with the copyright.

    I would HAPPILY buy all of my media for a ... 3rd time? 5th time? God I don't even know how many times I have purchased some of my music. Vinyl, CD, iTunes, streaming services a plenty... a second CD or two from mixes. Yeesh. I'm fucking tired of it. I want to be able to feel as if I had some kind of longer lasting ability to access the media of which I have paid for.

  • That is not the idea that he had in mind when devaluing the currency. Instead of respecting the international money market exchange rates for USD to the Peso, he has unilaterally declared a new value which is about half of what it was before. The idea is to make Argentinian goods and labor competitive on the international market so the country can vacuum up huge sums of money from greedy investors.

    That idea is dumb though because investors tend to want some kind of political stability. They will not just say "Oh I can build my widget for 30% cheaper in Argentina because of this money woo" - they will say "Oh, Argentina will probably seize my assets if we invest there because they're being run by a nutjob dictator."

  • I think in his bigbrain libertarian mind, the money market pricing of the peso to usd is what defined the value previously and he decided that the market's pricing is not correct for that of the Argentinian currency.

    By devaluing the currency, it makes Argentinian labor and goods comparatively cheaper on the international market. This is a similar move to how China grew at such a tremendous rate in the 90's - they intentionally devalued their currency in order to use foreign investment in their relatively cheap labor pool to fund the creation of their manufacturing industries.

    That solution probably won't work here, though. Corporations are scared of investing in countries with unstable political leadership that performs brash actions like his. (Libertarian economics cannot account for such beliefs though since everyone must be a perfectly rational actor that chooses price above all). They are afraid that he may unilaterally nationalize certain industries and claim all assets for the state. Or he may rugpull outside investments and say that all profits must go to the state for some amount of time. Whatever flavor of stupid chainsaw wielding antics he comes up with one day is what they will see and use as a justifiable rationalization for not investing in the devalued market of Argentina.

  • Let me preface this - I don’t consider myself a wine snob by any means.

    My wife and I went to wine country a year or so ago and went to some wineries to do tasting tours. We learned quite a lot. For instance, I can now taste the difference between good wine and bad. It basically comes down to the complexity of the flavors. If the wine is good, you can distinguish multiple flavors. If it is not, it just tastes like wine.

    As for why people care about where the grapes were grown and that mumobojumbo it is so they can try and correlate their tastes to things they know about wine. “Oh I oiked that bottle - it was a so and so from wherever made from this interesting blend of grapes” so they try other wines from that area or made with similar grapes.

    Real connoisseurs can tell the difference. Most make shit up and can’t identify whether a wine is white or red in a blind taste test. Everyone else is just looking for something to snoot about while drinking with their buddies and show off how expensive their supposed tastes are.

    Me, personally, I like “earthy” red wines. I don’t really know what that means specifically - that’s what the sommelier said when I told him which of the bottles I preferred and the reasons why I enjoyed those particular wines. Ok. That being said, I’ll drink boxed wine and sometimes I’ll spend $60 on a nice bottle to share on a special occasion.
