  • I've been following Stoat, their documentation states that self hosted voice channels don't work (I think their official server does though), and also you have to recompile their client software to hard code the link to your server.

  • The additions are to highlight the parts of our community that are typically underrepresented, more vulnerable, and facing higher levels of discrimination (i.e. trans people, intersex people, and queer people of color).

It also helps weed out the "LGB without the T" assholes. As a trans woman, seeing just the rainbow flag flying somewhere often makes me think "is this actually a safe place, or do they hate me more than the place next door with no flag?" Usually that isn't the case, but the doubt exists, and it sucks.

  • If you don't mind me asking, which state are you in? I'm 99% sure a court order name change certificate paired with a birth certificate should be sufficient to get a Real ID compliant ID in any state, even the ones especially hostile to trans people.

Edit: side note, I love your profile picture

  • Your birth certificate with your deadname combined with your court order for your name change legally satisfies the Real ID requirements. I've had a Real ID from 2 different states, and have had 0 issues when presenting that combination, along with my social security card for extra insurance.

You do have to specifically choose the Real ID paperwork at the DMV though, they can have different forms available for Real ID vs basic driver's license.

  • I have a Real ID. It has my correct gender despite my birth certificate not matching. You just need to show your birth certificate (yes it outs you to the DMV worker) and your certificate of name change, along with your proof of residence in the state you're getting it in. I've never had a driver's license that wasn't a Real ID.

Passports are currently fucked, it's true. You can probably get one with the correct name since it's changed with the SSA, but it might have the incorrect gender, though I don't know the specifics of that situation currently. I know some people have been able to legally fight back and get issued a correct passport under the current regime so it is potentially possible.

As for the far right and their goals, I'm fairly confident that we're far off from that particular goal, in certain parts of the country at least. I'm hoping that we can avert that entirely, but plenty of shitty state governments are working towards it unfortunately.

  • If you live in a state that lets you update your state issued ID (driver's license or otherwise), your birth certificate doesn't really come up particularly often. I changed my name and ID a few years ago, the only time my birth certificate has been relevant outside of the paperwork to get my name changed with SSA, my ID, passport, bank, etc. has been starting a new job.

My birth state does allow it to be changed, but it requires getting some paperwork notarized and completed by my doctor, and I have not gotten around to it yet as it doesn't really come up often.

Tl;dr: if you live somewhere that lets you self ID gender for your driver's license, getting your name changed and selecting the correct gender marker on your photo ID does result in mismatched documents, but it isn't usually relevant nor does it come up regularly.

  • Capone is why we have expiration dates on milk!

  • Fast storage is relative. It works flawlessly on a budget SATA SSD from like 10 years ago. It would probably have a 1-2 minute load time on a SATA spinning disk, but I have not used a system with a spinning disk boot drive in years.

  • Ease of access and familiarity for the large number of Raspberry Pi users is a good reason. Is there a popular, readily available RISC single board computer that has large community adoption? I'm not aware of one, but if there is, I'd like to know about it!

  • So I checked the specs, I misremembered. The CPU in the systems I'm using is a Pentium G630 @2.7 GHz with 4gb of ddr3. Benchmarks put that at about double the Celeron N3060 in performance. I'm also booting from an internal SATA SSD.

I think the most limiting factor for you is the live boot, it is pretty much always slower to boot from a live image than from an install.

  • It's been the "final" update about 10 times now, and I hope we get at least 10 more.

  • What hardware are you running this on? I've got Ubuntu with KDE running on some ancient Pentium dual core systems from like 2009 or 2010, and it boots to desktop in ~30 seconds or so.

  • Don't forget, accelerating quickly is the correct and safe thing to do in a lot of scenarios. If people could stop merging into 60 MPH highway traffic at 35, that would be great. That's a common driving experience where making use of your cars 0-60 time is important and safer, but the monitoring system will just see "rapid acceleration, that's unsafe".

  • Well nVidia just sells the hardware to the AI companies, so even if the bubble pops, they won't go bankrupt. They will stop making such obscene amounts of money, but they're one (also the largest) of the 3 major GPU vendors. Personal computing still would buy from them, as would non-AI datacenters. He wants to keep the bubble going for as long as possible to boost their profits for as long as he can, but as long as people need graphical rendering and parallel compute power, I don't think nVidia is going anywhere.

Think of them as the guy selling prospectors their tools. They hype everything up and jack up their prices for picks and shovels. When the prospectors don't find any gold to make their investment back, the shovel guy just goes back to selling shovels at normal rates and prices. Sure, he's not making as much profit, but he's still solidly in business.

  • The 2 genders are True and False. True for "I have a gender" and False for "I have no gender".

  • I was the favorite person for one of my family's cats. I moved out, and started medically transitioning about a year later. I would only come by about once per month, and he very clearly still knew it was me. He lived for about 2 years into my transition (he was like 18 when he died), and I remained his favorite person the whole time. So while they might notice changes, they can (at least sometimes) still tell it's you!
