  • The white brick at the bottom is for detecting large objects (cars) and is either controlling a traffic signal, or is being used to count traffic going through that spot.

    An intersection near me uses them to switch the lights at an intersection where traffic almost never comes from, so a timed light is unnecessary, but important traffic still comes from that direction.

  • I work in a place that deals primarily with aluminum extrusion and sheeting.

    About a month ago one of the guys at lunch was saying something about how he doesn't want his ex-wife to get his kids vaccinated because "all the aluminum and mercury is gonna make them r*****d"

    I told him to take a closer look at his tuna sandwich because he definitely has shed aluminum dust onto his food unless he takes his jacket off and shakes his hair out, and he should probably wear a mask because that faint glitter in the air isn't fairy dust. Also look up mercury content in tuna.

    The HR guy came out because apparently I "called a coworker a slur for autistic people" when he connected the dots that "if I believe those things make one autistic then they must be calling me autistic since I inhale and ingest aluminum all day at work and mercury is in my food" and felt that I was insulting him by informing him of the things he should already know.

    (apologies if this was a little incoherent, I just woke up)

  • Someone in my area keeps smashing three on one road, but because they wear plain black clothes and ride a generic mountain bike, an (I assume) don't bring a phone with them, it seems nobody can figure out who it is.   • Pretty much all I've been hearing is praise. I think it's more reflective of which places we go for discussions than reflective of the quality of the show.

    With a small but vocal minority hating on the (in best ferengi impression) feeeeeeeemale characters, it's been mostly "it's great" or "it's not my cup of earl Grey but it's being done well for the most part and I hope it does well"

    I know startrek.website tracks individual comments and posts, but not overall. So I would have to go back and check each individual comment and add up the total if I cared to find out how many points I have accumulated.

    I know some don't track any at all.

    I know lemmy.world tracks at least comment votes.

    I understand that a basic point system allows people to sort comments a little easier, but it really can reinforce echo chambers.

    I am guilty of often sorting posts with dozens of comments by top vote ranking, but I try to just do oldest to newest comments.

  • Last time I was near an apartment fire, the fire department didn't even waste time asking the crowd if anyone could move the car or figuring out if another hydrant was near, they just pulled in, lined the fire engine bumper up with the SUV, and pushed it fully out of the way of the hydrant. Tires all fucked up and one popped on the curb.

  • I am someone who is interested in rc planes, multirotors, and automation in general. Not an expert by any measure, but have some experience.

    A hybrid quad-rotor/plane would be much better for this. They can VTOL, hover, do all the quadcopter stuff, but there's still the usual plane motors to push the whole thing forward. The wings provide tons of lift and reduce the overall power usage of the system. Have it circle above an area until you don't need the pop-up mesh network.

    I've seen a few content creators like rctestflight make full solar planes, running ardupilot to fly way point missions and circle around for as long as possible.

    Combining the two might reduce the overall efficiency when compared to either separately, I imagine the extra grams from the mesh radios would still allow for very long flight times.

    So theoretically you should be able to toss a couple out that can circle overhead and act as super long line-of-sight relays and provide coverage over a huge area, all of which couod be deployed and packed up in minutes.
