I waddled onto the beach and stole found a computer to use.

Note: I'm moderating a handful of communities in more of a caretaker role. If you want to take one on, send me a message and I'll share more info :)
I know it's super expensive, but if I had to guess thats based on population?
This depends a lot on location. Some parts of Vancouver/ Toronto are expensive, some cities are cheaper
- I've got 12 years experience doing software development, Devops, system engineering, device engineering, with a BA in Computer Engineering. Are there certain companies to avoid? Certain companies/locations to check out? Salary isn't nearly as important as being able to afford living.
I'll wait for someone else to answer this.
I know some French and I am working on more. Is this helpful?
It could be helpful for roles in or adjacent to government, but it's not required for most jobs and especially in tech. If you live in a French speaking region, then it will be helpful for day to day life
Also, I need a bit of a kickstart to understanding the political landscape. We'll start with I'm pro-choice, an Ally, anti-gun, support democracy and love the ranked choice system, and subsidized healthcare. Taxes and the government work for the people.
Here are the positions of each of the federal parties on some key issues this election.

- Work commutes? I've done hour long commutes, I've done bus commutes, Ive walked to work, driven, and remote, just need to know what to expect.
It depends on the city and where you work. Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal have decent public transit
- I already say sorry for everything, any other cultural norms I should know about?
You sound reasonable and so I wouldn't worry.
For what it's worth, you'll sometimes hear people compare America's "melting pot" to Canada's "mixed salad" or "patchwork quilt". How true that is in practice is up for discussion, but the idea is that Canada has many parts coming together to make a whole, while still being distinguishable by the unique elements. There isn't the expectation for newcomers to shed their old culture and become purely " "Canadian" ".
This post was reported for potential astroturfing, likely because of the very long name (and the broken about page)
It looks like a real organization:

Welcome 😊
I agree, at our current moderation capacity it would lead to inconsistent moderation and arguments about where the 'quality threshold' is
Encouraging people to post better quality sources through comments might be better than fully restricting the posts?
I've prepped one here. @[email protected], how does this look? I simplified the rules somewhat by combining related rules. Also I don't think the astronomy picture of the day was working so I removed it and kept the link

I don't see any other comments in that thread, but I'll do it in both anyway 😄
I think it's a mix of the two. There are legitimate reasons, and commercial reasons
Synology does not manufacture its own hard drives but instead certifies and rebrands drives from Toshiba and Seagate, leaving out only Western Digital among the world's largest manufacturers.
They're disabling features
Synology, maker of network-attached storage (NAS) devices, will seemingly remove advanced features from its Plus devices that are not using hard drives provided by, or certified by, Synology itself, starting with its 2025 lineup.
What you might lose from using non-Synology-approved hard drives could include pool creation and support for any issues. De-duplication, lifespan analysis, and automatic HDD firmware updates could also disappear on non-approved drives, Synology's press release suggests.
What is the 48.4% for Reddit, since it isn't decentralized at all?

I shouldn't laugh, poor little dude 😄

German press release suggests expansion of the company’s “integrated ecosystem.”…
Synology's telegraphed moves toward a contained ecosystem and seemingly vertical integration are certain to rankle some of its biggest fans, who likely enjoy doing their own system building, shopping, and assembly for the perfect amount of storage. "Pro-sumers," homelab enthusiasts, and those with just a lot of stuff to store at home, or in a small business, previously had a good reason to buy one Synology device every so many years, then stick into them whatever drives they happened to have or acquired at their desired prices. Synology's stated needs for efficient support of drive arrays may be more defensible at the enterprise level, but as it gets closer to the home level, it suggests a different kind of optimization.
Answering the question:
Different groups or different people may choose to use different acronyms. The downvotes are likely from the implication that this is an annual change or 'flavour'.
Here is a discussion about this (as well other variations in terminology for ethnicity, homeless/unhoused, and more) from a UManitoba linguistics professor: https://theconversation.com/bipoc-or-ibpoc-lgbtq-or-lgbtq2s-who-decides-which-terms-we-should-use-159188
Tagging @[email protected] as well since they had a related question
I get comments on months old posts, I'm fine with it since it will help future users
If the person is looking for a discussion (ex. They need help with the software I posted about), then it's usually better they make a new post

It's actually possible to create local only communities, which would restrict access to users on lemmy.ca
. While that doesn't completely do what you're looking for since Canadians on other instances won't be able to see it, it might help somewhat?

The pilot and three passengers aboard the helicopter, as well as the penguin, were uninjured, according to an incident report.
Everyone was ok:
The aircraft sustained substantial damage but the pilot and passengers were uninjured, according to the incident report. The penguin was also unharmed, the report noted.
How it happened:
The pilot and passengers were conducting an aerial survey flight of an island off South Africa's Eastern Cape on January 19, 2025. The helicopter safely landed on Bird Island. Before departing, one of the passengers, who the incident report referred to as a "specialist," asked that they transport one of the penguins on the island back with them. The pilot agreed, and the penguin was placed in a cardboard box.
When the helicopter was at an altitude of around 50 feet, the cardboard box slid off the passenger's lap -- onto the pilot's cyclic pitch control lever, the incident report said. The helicopter rolled to the right. The pilot could not recover, the incident report said. As the aircraft descended, the main rotor blades of the helicopter struck the ground, and the helicop

Dr Brian Morley claims Last Week Tonight host and show took his words out of context in a 2024 episode on Medicaid
Oliver cited an interview with Facenda and his mother and primary caregiver, Joann, on the difficulties faced by people with disabilities as the state shifted to for-profit “managed care organizations”, leaving Facenda spending hours in dirty diapers.
Oliver played audio from Morley’s testimony at a 2017 administrative hearing, that aired as such: “People have bowel movements every day where they don’t completely clean themselves, and we don’t fuss over [them] too much. People are allowed to be dirty … You know, I would allow him to be a little dirty for a couple of days.”
Oliver said of the snippet: “Look, I’ll be honest, when I first heard that, I thought that has to be taken out of context. There is no way a doctor, a licensed physician, would testify in a hearing that he thinks it’s okay if people have shit on them for days. So, we got the full hearing, and I’m not going to play it for you, I’m just going to tell you: he said it, he meant it, and it made me want to punc
