Heyo! Just another random who's moving over from centralized social media to the Fediverse. Mastodon wasn't too bad but I love anything like Reddit!
Games, anime, Japanese, food, and music are my loves. Fanfic beats food tho, I can read for hours instead!

I don't know about the ROMs being a pain in the ass. I did a test run of putting LineageOS on my old Motorola and using adb sucked a little, but once I got it working, it had no issues. I did that so I would know what I was doing for the real purpose of putting GrapheneOS on my Pixel 8a, and they literally had a button on the website that worked like a dream (but only on chromium browser...) and did the process in about 20 mins top. Been using it for almost a year now.
The only issue I've had was Google Messages RCS and banking apps. I can live without the wallet and banking apps, and even then, some banking apps work anyway lol (super long GitHub report list about them). RCS was frustrating, but I think it was caused by not deregistering my number from my old iPhone, as it hasn't conked out again.
I really don't get what wouldn't work outside of that. Maybe it's been a while since you tried android ROMS. Wish I had one as good and debated as GrapheneOS for my Galaxy Tab I just got, but it's so new that there's nothing but a GSI for it...

tl;dr: You're out of luck, maybe ask for recommendations in AO3 comment sections. Using AI to recommend fics is the antithesis of the community
You could try this Google Colab Notebook code made by this Reddit post, IDK if it works though.
Long Post:
Why would a rec engine have anything to do with LLMs?
You literally asked for an AI tool to recommend you fics. An LLM is just another fancy name for AI.
A large language model (LLM) is a type of machine learning model designed for natural language processing tasks such as language generation. LLMs are language models with many parameters, and are trained with self-supervised learning on a vast amount of text.
The only way it would be able to recommend you fics, is to use data from sources that it's been fed. It needs to be able to process text so it can understand grammar, but also understand what people like/read to then "recommend" you something that it "thinks you would like" which is usually just more data of what other people similarly did (algos are a tad creepy tbh). Often, these sources are not compensated and are just stolen straight from random posts, articles, stories, etc. on the Internet, including AO3 works.
Unless an algorithm went purely off of kudos & history of users, maybe with some added tags for specification, that's about the only way I could think of recommendations without AI/LLM. But you literally put AI in your post. Not to mention AO3 stalking users history is just... no. They know that would kill the service (due to loss of user trust), and people would use the code to just make an alternative (like SquidgeWorld Archive)
Unfortunately, if your fandom is dead, fic recommendations aren't gonna fix the lack of content on AO3
If they're toxic, then block and move on, or just stop checking that community and look on another site, especially Tumblr. People write fic on there and tend to be a tad more open/welcoming due to so many of them also being AO3 lovers.
IDK why you specifically hate Discord, but if it doesn't work for you, don't use it I guess.
The discovery is pretty damn good when clicking tag first and then filtering, especially if you use the search within results feature. It scans tags, authors, summaries, notes, etc based on what you type. Use the Boolean operators like AND, OR, and NOT (-) to help narrow searches, along with * and " ". People have great guides on searching
Look at the bookmarks of authors you like, or readers who read similar pics to see what they're reading now. I have found a few gems that way. Subscribe to authors that you like, see what they make next, or gift, etc.
Once again, I really don't know how they could make it better, besides more frequent tag wrangling...

When You're So Early to The Fandom That There's Not An Official Tag

Just watched To Be Hero X ep 1 and 2 in eng dub today and immediately got hooked. Was curious to see if there were Ao3 fics, and there are, but we're so young that it didn't have an official fandom tag 😭
This is my first time ever being so early lol, I'll treasure it, can't wait to see it hit 1000k fics by season end!
Also that first episode was fucking CRAZY

AI can certainly have uses, and was already used for some things before the craze took off after COVID. Especially when using open source, local LLMs that you trained yourself and use local resources instead of killing the planet in mass data centers...
But really? AI and AO3??? And needing an LLM to find fic recs????
The tag system is literally right there. You can make it so specific that it's almost insane how easy it is (unless you're looking for tags that haven't been registered yet). It's really crazy seeing people begging for a robot to tell them that they'll like this post. It's refreshing to discover on my own. Or just go to other social media sites, search your fandom in tags, and find fanfic recs that way... I've found so many amazing fics by simply just interacting in the fandom online and reading people's work and posts/comments.
People are rightfully protecting their work, no wonder AI stuff isn't working on there. Staff has made more efforts to block bots, and people are making fics log-in only. I think you need to just take the time to get lost and have fun.

God I am ever amazed at the millions of videos on YT that I would've never seen on my life had people not linked them. Literally never would've imagined modern day pirates exist, that they're this dumb, and that some guy on YT just uploaded it and that it's still there.

Okay it was bad enough that people were just straight up dipping their hands into the pile, but that one lady who just straight up took a whole second plate and scooped them up was fucking insane 💀

God, I don't wanna look like a crazy tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist to my friends, but I hope one day they magically get concerned or ask me for privacy respecting alternative services. I haven't really had the chance to actually test how good Revolt, Matrix, and SimpleX are, but all of them would be worth trying a million times more than Discord.
I wish we would use Signal instead. But unfortunately I have to resign myself to using Discord and GroupMe for school and friends. At least they don't hate me for not using Insta, although some randos do seem to be annoyed by my reluctance to use it on first meet.
It's just so hard trying not to isolate myself from friends. I get that the alternatives aren't always great (might lack video calls, easy bot management, sever costs, shitty UX and onboarding, etc.) but we gotta at least give them a try...

I new it was bad for devs on Apple, but holy shit. Now I finally know why Ankidroid is free on everything else but $25 on Apple. Atrocious, that shit is extortion...

Forgot these funky dudes exists. Yes, exactly them. I love it and I'm giggling at how dumb it is.

You must've hated spelling bees as a kid

Katamari's 5am Mourning Routine in my ass
Really hope the little prince isn't rolling my shit into a ball...

They're built like if Legos and Miis had a child. Like the face and the hands, but the roundness combine together is just so funny.

My sister was a Shuffle crackhead and did the daily challenges and got super far into the game while I gave up by like world 3 lol. Some of those stages were fucking ridiculous from what I saw, but she never gave up lol. It was super cute though, and I loved the mega gimmick.

That's super interesting, crazy that they scrapped that cause Picross would've been great for GB Color. I'm learning Japanese so I'll probably try it without the language patch, but I do wanna see how rage worthy those time limits are lol.

Pokemon Picross was my introduction to the genre, and I fucking loved it. I played that game religiously when it dropped as a kid, and played it like every day. I just hated how money hungry it was, like their other free 3DS games (Shuffle, Rumble World). Basically any free Pokemon 3DS game was peak in terms of gameplay, but dogshit in terms of monetization.
I still really want a Pokepark, Rangers, or Conquest game 😭
In terms of good mobile games, I didn't appreciate Duel enough before they scrapped it. It was fun and the strategies seemed like they could be super interesting. Plus it has a banger menu theme.

I shit you not, my mom literally just was talking about that anime and joking about it with me last night. I think it's because we were talking about police anime.
Like if I knew Lemmy didn't have an algorithm, I'd think this shit was targeted.

Oh yeah that shit made me crack up and I knew it was fake, but it's funny to imagine.

So much crazy shit has happened this year that for an honest second, I was dead set in believing this was real. I feel like there are some people that are this desperate. But unfortunately I'm cursed with the power of reading for more than 10 seconds.

It's what it was advertised as originally, but then brands realized they could boom in sales by dropping that act and making cute, colorful cartridges with a shit ton of flavors that appeal to teens. Some girl had these iPod case looking ones that were flavored like pineapple banana or smth. Hell they make vapes disguised as school supplies now.
There's a lot of people who didn't do drugs at all that started with vaping (Truth Initiative has a 2020 study about it, I skimmed it tbh), and it's especially bad in middle and high schools. I saw people hitting huge fucking clouds in the middle of a classroom, near the teacher's desk. One idiot made a cloud in our dark classroom with the curtains shining sunlight on him, so they had to close the blinds and fan the cloud so he wouldn't get caught.
They know full well they're creating future addicts and eventual cigarette smokers, and they don't give a damn.

I did that, and I'm 99% sure the github reports and others in the forums did that. It would've been reported by now if they work, and they just don't.

+1 for the mailbox.org, moving to it as Proton's CEO Andy outed himself as a Trump supporter. It's been working fine so far with my anonaddy (moved from simplelogin to...)
I'm using Thunderbird on my phone to see my mailbox.org emails
Is Misskey A Good Place To Immerse More?
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.zip/post/29705704
So I've been getting more into the Fediverse, as I already had a Mastodon account for a bit. But I've joined Lemmy (love it btw, used to login to Reddit before API death ⚰️🕊️) and am thinking of joining Misskey since there's such a huge Japanese speaking community there.
But is it a good idea, and has anyone here joined? I can read decently, I'm playing Ace Attorney 5 in Japanese (finished the 1st case), I'm doing a Wanikani beginner bookclub that seems right around my level, and I'm almost done with Genki 2 (Quartet books already ordered). So I feel like this is prime time for doing more immersing and interacting with Japanese content.
Which server did you join, main, or a more niche one? Did you focus purely on the theme/content of the server?
I like games, anime, and fanart, and I'm okay with some NSFW, but I'm a little afraid of the misskey servers cause the big art ones are full of hentai/NSFW (Pawoo...). I won'
