Ooh, just checked out your post^[Yeah, you don't have to worry about self-promotion rules or anything like that. It's not like you're selling anything, and "karma" totals don't even exist on Lemmy to my knowledge. You would have to be a genuine spammer for anything like that to be an issue.]—that's so cool! Making all the art and rigging from scratch is super impressive (I could never).
I've heard a lot about how Live2D is an absolute clusterfuck from both a software maintenance and licensing perspective, so it would be amazing if a libre alternative like Inochi2D could gain a significant foothold. I imagine the biggest problem is that the artists who are really skilled in modeling/rigging make their money on Live2D models and are not gonna put their careers on hold to learn an entirely new system that is also not supported by the most popular VTubing software (VTube Studio). If that second part could be solved, that would probably go a long way in making adoption easier, but seeing as VTube Studio is also proprietary software and the developer would have little incentive to spend time on a complex feature that would affect the very core of the system while also being incredibly niche and irrelevant to the biggest players, it's a bit of a chicken and the egg problem. I would love for some of the most successful VTubers to see the long-term benefit of a free and open competitor to Live2D and give significant financial support to Inochi2D, but alas, that's not the world we live in.
Even as unlikely as it seems with the current state of things, I would love to see what a rigging wizard like cillia could accomplish with the tech^[Her Laimu rig still blows me away every time I see it, it's so incredibly expressive. There's a typical model showcase which demonstrates all the toggles and full range of motion, but I think seeing Laimu actually using it sells it the best.]. Beyond the obvious publicity benefits, I'm sure someone of that caliber would be able to give invaluable advice about how to improve the interface and capabilities of the software. Back in the real world, though, what's the most sophisticated Inochi2D rig you've come across? Just curious to see where the tech has been pushed thus far.
As for the short—yeah, the hug was my favorite part, too.
Elira Pendora (a.k.a. Ewiwa a.k.a. Wiwa a.k.a. Ewiwi Pendowi), the blue one in the foreground:
I'd wager a huge part of the problem is that we were never meant to raise kids siloed off in nuclear households. Rather than putting the burden on their parents, children ought to be brought up and cared for by the community at large, which even extends to older children. I experienced this a bit of this growing up, hanging out with other kids from the neighborhood in groups where there could be a wide range of ages (as much as 5 years). Interacting in groups like that allows the older kids to learn how to mediate and the younger kids to learn how to socialize amicably. I read some interesting anthropological research about this topic that looked at hunter-gatherer societies, but I'm having trouble tracking it down at the moment. If anyone's interested, drop a reply and I'll tag you if I do manage to find it!
I was wondering about some of the odd framing of the article (especially the assumption that the "real poor" are totally fine, actually, the government benefits cover everything!) at which point I realized that this is Bari Weiss' publication lmao. But framing aside, the basic numerical analysis seems solid, and it's fucking wild that this "poverty line" I've been hearing about my entire life that seemed suspiciously low was based on some back-of-the-napkin math from the 1960s. Definitely something I'll be telling people about. Thank you for sharing!
Not seeing that in the article. The nephew is her brother's son (not sure why it's not explicitly stated in this article as it was in the WBUR story that broke the news), and the boy's mother is the one who was detained by ICE. From the WBUR article:
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt now has a family connection to the ICE actions sweeping the country — her nephew’s mother was arrested by agents in Revere earlier this month.
Bruna Ferreira, a Boston-area resident who migrated with her family to the U.S. from Brazil as a child, according to her sister and immigration authorities, is now in custody at an ICE facility in Louisiana.
Michael Leavitt, the press secretary's brother, had a relationship with Ferreira, and the two have a son.
A Trump administration official confirmed the connection between Ferreira, Michael Leavitt and his sister Karoline Leavitt — the 28-year-old New Hampshire native who rose from relative obscurity to occupy one of the most prominent positions in the White House. The official said the child's parents have not spoken in years, and that the child has lived full-time in New Hampshire with Michael Leavitt since his birth.
WBUR could not immediately confirm whether the boy only lived with his father after the couple separated. The split happened about 10 years ago, according to a family member.
The company claims it has one of the best compensation packages in the industry, and we can see this in the leaked data shared by The Verge, which shows that Valve spent nearly $450 million on employee salaries, with a weighted average of more than $1.3 million per employee.
That does actually seem to be the case (at least on average), although they're obviously still not being paid their fair share if Gabe Newell is a billionaire.
Sorry, I hoped it might be able to at least fill in some of the gaps. Even on Windows 10, the File Explorer shits the bed pretty often, so I end up working around it as best I can. Hope they'll put out a fix soon...what an absurd situation.
Trying to explain to people that the term "immunity debt" was literally fabricated out of whole cloth and has no scientific basis makes me feel fucking crazy.
This prompted me to read over the most recent filings in the federal case and damn, the Keystone Cops over in Altoona really screwed up by both failing to Mirandize Luigi and performing an illegal search of his backpack without a warrant; the defense wants to exclude all of this evidence from the trial. As a completely uninformed layperson, that seems like an implausible outcome even though the basic arguments they used seemed sound, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. They also made some more technical arguments against the specific charges that have been filed which seemed quite strong to me (again, I have no idea how likely they are to prevail).
When they were talking about the myriad prejudicial statements that have been made by the feds and the lack of independence of the Department of Justice from the White House, it was pretty funny to see them include a screenshot of that time Trump accidentally posted a message intended for Attorney General Pam Bondi to Truth Social—here's the message to jog your memory:
Pam: I have reviewed over 30 statements and posts saying that, essentially, “same old story as last time, all talk, no action. Nothing is being done. What about Comey, Adam “Shifty” Schiff, Leticia??? They’re all guilty as hell, but nothing is going to be done.” Then we almost put in a Democrat supported U.S. Attorney, in Virginia, with a really bad Republican past. A Woke RINO, who was never going to do his job. That’s why two of the worst Dem Senators PUSHED him so hard. He even lied to the media and said he quit, and that we had no case. No, I fired him, and there is a GREAT CASE, and many lawyers, and legal pundits, say so. Lindsey Halligan is a really good lawyer, and likes you, a lot. We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility. They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), OVER NOTHING. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!! President DJT
Oh, nice! I really ought to go through my own PTW list—I've really been in the seasonal anime churn these past few years, but there's a ton of great older shows that have been languishing in the queue. I've also never been that great about finding new anime via the staff of anime I've already watched, but it seems like the most knowledgeable people I know all do that.
Reject File Explorer, embrace Everything. Sure, it's mostly only meant for opening/deleting files, but with the help of Copy as path/Copy Full Name to Clipboard (the former only appears when holding Shift while right-clicking) you can even do some file management with the command line, which is something I do rather often in Windows 10.
I know nothing about Avatar 2 other than that it came out and it apparently made $2.3 billion fucking dollars. I guess it's similar to Avatar 1 in that it has had zero long-term cultural impact. Like, for Avatar 1, beyond "3D waow" the only discourse I remember seeing is:
It was similar to Dances with Wolves/FernGully/etc.
Only #2 directly references specific content of the movie, and even then it was basically just topical late night/SNL fodder and then gone forever. Also, the Papyrus short is much better (and infinitely more memorable) than the actual movie.
