  • American FBI forgets that Canada has not yet been annexed by the United States. They’re not required to do shit, they don’t even go here.

    I'm sure they do plenty of business in the US, though, so I don't think the feds would have trouble turning the screws if they needed to. But I'd be happy to be proven wrong!

  • Forgive me if this is a silly question, but is there a mechanism for the client to check whether the site has been updated to avoid having to pull down that big ol' blob o' JSON if it's not necessary? My first guess would have been to check for a Last-Modified header and compare with the header on the previous fetch, but it doesn't look like the server sets that header. I guess you could use Content-Length, but that's a bit crude. There's .site_view.site.updated, which would fit the bill if accurate, but you'd still have to do a partial download and then pull it out with regex or something since the JSON structure would be mangled, which makes me think there ought to be a better way.

  • I don't always follow everything, but I love that he can be talking about arcane techniques like setting the HOLP, spawning displacement, RNG dust manipulation, and Goomba escorts, and I'll just be nodding along like, "Well yeah, of course." Genuinely one of my hopes for the distant FALGSC future is that everyone's needs are met to the extent that they can have a hobby so delightful yet utterly without practical purpose. And hey, just like basic research, you never know what's going to come out of a bunch of nerds screwing around.

  • Yeah, it's a little less clear compared to something like Gen I Pokémon out-of-bounds where you can actually see yourself traversing between PUs, but they're real to me, dammit!

  • Wonder if he got a lot of Republican votes and that bolstered his numbers?

    This has to be part of the story, at least. Bill de Blasio won 73.15% of the vote in his first election, with the Republican candidate taking 24.31%. Curtis Sliwa only won 7.1% of the vote (as of this comment, with 91% reporting), so a sizeable chunk of Cuomo's 41.6% must be Republican voters unless huge numbers of them stayed home. I assume will get some more detailed data on this in the coming days.

  • did this remind anyone of

  • I'm making these all Xcancel links so others can check them out, which I hope isn't too annoying—you can prevent the redirect by clicking "click here" on the interstitial page or clicking the Twitter icon in the upper right after the page loads.

    @1goodtern - lots of good stats about COVID and COVID sequelae in the UK as well as narratives about patients (they work in healthcare in some capacity). Also some non-COVID related liberalism, but not much of that comes across my feed, thankfully. ** @michael_hoerger** - New Orleans-based maintainer of the PMC COVID-19 Data Dashboard, which is my go-to source for COVID transmission data in the US. Posts highlights from the weekly updates to Twitter, among other things.

    @ghhughes - Does a ton of quantitative testing on masks (see his YouTube channel)

    @NukitToBeSure - Chinese maker who mainly works on Far-UVC and filtration. Deep first-hand knowledge about the practicalities of manufacturing in Shenzhen, often calls out shoddy over overpriced Western products and has the data to back it up.

    @nickelpin - LA-based artist and COVID activist who is a great source of inspiration on how to decorate, accessorize, and style masks

    @openaeros - Minnesota-based project spearheaded by aerosol engineer Aaron Collins (a.k.a. The Mask Nerd) with the goal of producing an open source CPC (used for measuring air quality as well as doing quantitative fit tests for respirators) and and open source elastomeric mask. They've actually produced their first version of the OpenCPC, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they come up with for the OpenRespirator (posted a video about their prototyping process here a while back). I think they are more active on Bluesky, for what its worth (@OpenAeros, @masknerd). Actually, it only just occurred to me to check if Bluesky has RSS feeds, and apparently it does! No idea how well they work, but here are the corresponding RSS feeds for OpenAeros and Aaron Collins.

    Once you get following a few COVID conscious accounts and like their tweets, you should get a bunch more flowing through your For You page, so hopefully that's enough to get you started!

    A lot of COVID twitter can be fairly lib/privileged, so honestly I could use some help in finding accounts that have a more leftist bent. That said, I don't think you'll have any issues with putting the watermelon/Palestinian flag emojis in your handle. Also if someone can recommend good leftist Twitter accounts that actually tweet out useful/informative stuff instead of spending all day dunking on chuds and thus dragging the most reactionary garbage onto my FYP

    Also, I'm 100% a lurker, so other folks can probably (and hopefully will) give better advice about the social conventions and whatnot.

  • Very true! Although, in a scenario in which I were actually doing something nefarious, it's not difficult to run arbitrary code whenever a property is accessed—here's a relevant example from StackOverflow using Proxy() and modified to fit our scenario:

      javascript

    // Source - https://stackoverflow.com/questions/44691071/how-do-i-invoke-a-function-whenever-a-property-of-an-object-is-read
    // Posted by Andrew Li
    // License - CC-BY-SA 4.0

    const obj = {};
    const windоw = new Proxy(obj, {
      get(target, property, receiver) {
        console.log('HACKERMANS I\'m in');
      }
    });
    windоw.isoData.site_res.taglines.length; //A property is accessed and the console is logged to

    In this case, it'll throw an error, since there is no site_res (or anything below it) in our toy example, but the code in get runs all the same. Also, since window is a reserved global variable, I had to be a little sneaky and swap out the Latin o for a Cyrillic o to avoid the naming conflict.

    Anyhow, another advantage of accessing the array is that you can then click to expand it in your browser console and peruse the taglines at your leisure!

    Also, hello, fellow Aer!

  • I love that the lead photo in the article makes it look like he's fist pumping after sending that text lmao

  • Just looking at those domains/paths, these are all probably parts of sites that allow user uploads for various legitimate purposes . Presumably, AI scammers have realized that they can upload shit there and use them for free hosting with a legit-seeming domain that will pass through web filters that aren't scanning the content of pages. When I used sketchy debrid services ages ago, they were often hosted on student hosting for universities or hospital websites in various SEA countries.

  • Omg, this Dokibird stream...nature is healing...

    If I were an optimist, I would say this would reduce the constant stream of vitriol towards the remaining members, but since I'm not an optimist I'm guessing people will assume even worse of them. 100% not Dokibird's fault, though, and it's frustrating when people blame her for what was clearly people using the situation to attack people they already hated—I think she's talked less about her corpo life than anybody else. C'est la vie...regardless, it's so nice to see him back and seemingly in high spirits, especially after the recent kerfuffle.
