Is it possible or has it been done, can a Honeypot be created with bash aliases that would use a very common command someone would run if they were in your system but it aliases to some

Sort of command that would pull a download that is self executed to the host machine?

That's worded a bit fucky, if I need to elaborate, please chime in.

What is your go-to bolognese recipe?

I tried the weeknight bolognese that ATK published, but it was not nearly as good as others I've had. I think there were too many shortcuts taken...

So tell me, what is your go-to recipe for a flavorful pasta bolognese?

Quietest 16-18TB hard drive for NAS

Original question by @[email protected]

Looking to upgrade my NAS hard drives. Currently have two 4TB WD Red Plus hard drives but I wanted to get some large capacity drives. Was looking into getting 16 or 18TB drives. My current drives are basically whisper quiet and have been running great since 2019 but I feel like it's time to upgrade the capacity.

The NAS is currently on a desk beside my computer. I don't have any cabinets to place it in and would prefer not to connect to it through Wi-Fi. Hence why I'd like for the drives to be as quiet as possible.

I was considering getting a Seagate Exos or Ironwolf (and buying used for the great price) but I've read users online saying they regret buying those models because of their noise. I was also looking at the WD Red Pro but WD's own website only rates them at 3.6/5 with most of the negative complaints about dead on arrival drives. Additionally 25% of all reviews are 1 star

Cutting Board Recommendations (Machine Washable, No Microplastics)

Hi all! We'd like to stop using our plastic cutting boards due to cutting little bits of plastic into our food. Unfortunately, the most obvious alternative, wooden cutting boards, are more of a pain to clean.

I'd love suggestions on what I could use instead. I saw there's a brand called Epicurean that uses some sort of other material that can be machine washed. Has anyone used them before?

I'd especially love something made in Germany or in the EU, but I'm open to looking farther afield if necessary.

Thank you!

  • On Windows 10, you can create a second, third, or more desktops. I use one of these as my task focused desktop to get stuff done. It's great for me because only the web browser and tabs that I open in it will be shown. This helps a lot to keep me from seeing another browser instance and having the urge to switch back.

  • I use an Android and realized just this year that I could pause apps. To do this, hold your finger on the app for 2 seconds. A menu will appear, and the hourglass looking thing is tapped to pause the app. This is great for me when I don't want to get pinged with a bunch of stuff in a set period of time. It also saves battery energy as the app is either no longer running in the background or is running on a low amount of energy. Then when you're ready to use a paused app, hold your

Global Dark Mode Setting in NixOS Config (no home manager)

Basically the title. I would like apps that auto detect system theme to see it as dark mode. I’ve come across post after post of doing this with home manager, but I’d like to just do it in my base nix config. I tried a few different ways to declare what I thought was being done in the home manager tutorials in my config, but none of it worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Would a "soft block" be a useful feature?

I realize Lemmy already has user blocking, so this might seem redundant. But, hear me out:

Problems with Lemmy's blocking:

  • If you are a mod, blocking a user will hide their submissions even in the community/communities you're moderating. You'll still see their content if its reported, but you can't be proactive. e.g. Sometimes you'd like to block someone, but it's not warranted to ban them from your community(s), and you don't want to rely only on reports or see their shit elsewhere. So you just kinda grit your teeth and deal with it.
  • As a regular user, blocking someone will hide their comments AND any replies to those comments. You'll often miss out on quite a bit.

Proposal: Soft block (or, more aptly "Filter User")

Instead of blocking at the API level, it will simply filter out the users in the UI.

I've greatly enhanced the keyword and other filtering components in the current dev branch which is what prompted this idea. With the revised implementation, commen

(US) Any actions to prevent Medical information leak?

Hi, I just found out my dentists office is using a program called "Second Opinion" produced by "Hello Pearl". There is literally no information about what this company does in the background with my information, however I know they at the very least have:

  1. My full legal name
  2. X-Rays of my teeth

I'm concerned because there is literally nothing online about how to opt out of them using your data for AI training. They are an AI company and the screen the Dentist was showing me showed a pop-up about provides information being able to be used for AI training. What should I do, what are my rights?

How to re-authenticate a paperless-ngx oauth2 mail configuration

Hi,

I've been been happily running paperless for a while now, and I've even got a few useful mail actions. However, I'm having trouble keeping the oauth2 (gmail) configuration alive past a few weeks. I suspect the refresh token expires, since the configuration stops working. And since I can't figure out how to re-authenticate, I have to create a new configuration, move all actions to the new one, and delete the old one.

Does anyone know how I can keep the original config and just re-authenticate?

Thanks

Send NTFY notification to a dashboard like Glance? | Self-host a simple dynamic json api to hook to the Glance dashboard (custom API)?

Partially Solved

While I haven't found a native solution on how to integrate NTFY to glance, I did build up something that actually send basic text streams to glance in an automated way. It's very rudimentary and probably error prone, but that's the best I could do right now... Maybe someone else will chime in and give some better advice/solution.

For those interested postgREST allows to build a simple docker container postgres database you can query for the custom api in glance. It DOES work, but If like myself, your database/json/postgre knowlege is very limited, it only allows basic text response like: "Update Failed".

I did try to get a little further into the rabbit hole, but it does come with the necessity to have a good database and query/response background ? Not a very good solution and will probably not go one or try to improve on that right now... But feel free to give better advice or another lead to foll

Is TrueNAS VM useful in my use case?

BLUF: Do I really need to run TrueNAS VM?

Newbie, running ProxMox to host Plex and associated *arr servers, Nextcloud, DNS, and about a dozen other services. I am running TrueNAS Core in VM.

I have three zfspools; one for OS install, one for Cloud storage, and one for Media storage.

In configuring my Media storage pool, I passed the disks from ProxMox to TrueNAS VM and created a SMB share. Then, apparently to mount the share to Plex, I needed to pass the pool from TrueNAS back to ProxMox. This seems overcomplicated to me but I'm not sure if my thinking is correct.

Basically I'd like some sort of management GUI for storage, just to the extent that shows me how full the storage is, errors, and if a disk goes bad.

If I do get rid of TrueNAS, how do I properly mount the disks back into ProxMox without losing the TBs of data I have on my Media storage pool?

Running Frigate on VM that in turn runs on Proxmox

Hi, I want to get Frigate installed on DELL Optiplex 3020. Given its a Intel Gen4 i5, I suspect I would be asking too much if I installed it on a VM that is running on Proxmox? From the Frigate website "Frigate runs best with Docker installed on bare metal Debian-based distributions. For ideal performance, Frigate needs low overhead access to underlying hardware for the Coral and GPU devices. Running Frigate in a VM on top of Proxmox, ESXi, Virtualbox, etc. is not recommended though some users have had success with Proxmox.". Anyone had any luck getting it up and running on a VM?

Why does a Docker container have access to a directory on my system not explicitly mounted as volume?

I am in the process of migrating my Nextcloud instance from one server to another. I copied the Borg archive to one mountpoint, /mnt/ncbackup and intend to keep my data in /mnt/ncdata.

I couldn't really find out what to mount the backup directory to, so I just fired it up as documented in the documentation, and I was able to retrieve my backups from the non-mounted directory.

So this reveals a fundamental flaw in my understanding of how Docker works - I had assumed the container only had access to whatever was explicitly mounted. But I guess I am wrong?

This is the command I run:

 undefined

sudo docker run \
--init \
--sig-proxy=false \
--name nextcloud-aio-mastercontainer \
--restart always \

--env APACHE_IP_BINDING=0.0.0.0 \
--env APACHE_ADDITIONAL_NETWORK="" \
--env SKIP_DOMAIN_VALIDATION=false \
--env NEXTCLOUD_DATADIR="/mnt/ncdata" \

What's the best way to upload a picture to lemmy?

I've heard some servers struggled or even had to shut down because of storage costs. But that was a while ago, so it may not even still be a thing anymore.

There's the option of posting images to third-party services (like imgur or whatever), but I've been frustrated with not being able to see third-party images when scrolling the feed in Lemmy apps.

What's the meta right now?
