hacking together a search engine on a work-in-progress setup :3

This is a woefully underpowered laptop I got for free! I'm working to make it into a secure portable machine (since it does support secureboot & TPM-backed disk encryption) to take on the go that I don't fear losing. This is mostly for doing programming & study, on stuff that doesn't require high-performances, so the 2 gigs of RAM are just about enough for regular use -- and it prevents me from being distracted, as I can't load most website on that poor thing…

I'm using 2 bars -- I originally only wanted to use a vertical one, unfortunately not all waybar modules support rotation, so I settled for this, which works quite well in my experience :3

Stuff I use:

  • Catppuccin Frappe as a color scheme on most things
  • Emacs for programming & taking notes (org-mode my beloved)
  • Alacritty as a terminal, with the fish shell
  • Firefox (fuck chromium)
  • stmps as a music player, connected to my selfhosted Nextcloud instance, with a bunch of songs obtained through legal m

I'll post my dwl setup very soon...

Trying to recreate this setup:

What I got so far:

Yes the icons on the status bar are mixing with the text. And yes I see you judging my interesting choice of color scheme + my wallpaper! The void. Interesting how past me was thinking. So it turns out it's a bit of a doozy. But I found some interesting projects:

  • dwl A tiling window manager, which is a fork of dwm for Wayland. Really nice project with a ton of patches.
  • dwl-bar I was searching for a nice bar for a very long time. Tried waybar which is a total no! I also tried yambar. I had some very strong expectations for it but the YAML config file looks much more scarier and complicated than editing config.h in C. dwl-bar allows for a much more "authentic" dwm
