Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmier hugging it out with Cheeto Man.

First came their much-analyzed Oval Office moment. Next, their subject-to-interpretation hug.

The two interactions between President Donald Trump and a sometime antagonist, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, reflect the Democratic governor’s efforts to move past last year’s hard-fought campaign and find common ground with the Republican president — at risk of political backlash.

Whitmer, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, shared a hug with Trump as he arrived in her home state on Tuesday, less than a month after she shielded her face f

(2013) Op-ed: Democrats Throw Queers Under the Bus—Again

LGBT Americans are the Democrats' house Negroes. I'm sorry if that comparison offends anyone, but it's the most accurate societal comparison I can make. The Democrats let us come right up close and then remind us we are really just there to serve them with our votes and campaign contributions.

I'm not sure what it was about the immigration amendment vote that made me so angry -- it's not like being thrown under the political bus hasn't become a commonplace for LGBT Americans. Maybe it was because I know what those airport farewells are like. Or maybe it was just the cumulative effect of the Democrats screwing me and every other LGBT person in America over time and again. Or maybe it felt racist in addition to homophobic.

At present over 50,000 lesbian and gay couples would be impacted by the amendment being withdrawn. That's a lot of tears in a lot of airports around the world.

But immigration reform for LGBT people isn't just about lesbian and gay married couples. It's also

Should we pre-emptively defederate Threads?

Threads will be implementing federation in the near future and many instances have been discussing whether they should be pre-emptively defederated to protect the fediverse. See below for our local discussion thread, which will remain active until this vote is complete.

Given that this is a time-sensitive issue and it's the holiday season, we decided to initiate the vote a few days early to make sure everyone gets a chance to vote. The vote will be tallied on Friday, December 29th.

Pre-emptive Threads defederation

Should sh.itjust.works preemptively defederate from Threads?

Threads is the not-so-new reddit-like twitter-like public forum platform by Meta, the same commercial company behind internet behemoths like Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp. They're working on ActivityPub integration so that they can bridge (federate?) with the fediverse. As far as I know, the focus is on Mastodon instances, but in the future that could include Lemmy instances too.

Some have raised the question, worried about the future of the fediverse or even claiming that it goes against its definition.

What do you think should be done?

EDIT: correction

EDIT.2: The Vote is on! Go make your voice heard. You have until Friday the 29th.

Book of the Month Vote Here

Hello /c/sciencefiction, it is that time of the month. Time to vote for the book of the month. The options are loosely collected from the most voted and discussed books in the "What are you Reading" thread for August.

At the end of the month the poll will be closed and the winner will be the book of the month for August 2023. Myself and hopefully some others will read this book over the following month and then near the end of the month a discussion post will be made to talk about it.
