Here is Thursday's Lenten reading (4/3/25) according to:

John 5:31-47

Witnesses to Jesus. 31 “If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony cannot be verified. 32 But there is another[l] who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true. 33 You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth. 34 I do not accept testimony from a human being,

A good bit of literature has studied the problem and arrived to recommendations that overlap in parts & depart in others with this playbook.

[A former parliamentarian of the Hungarian government studied its slide into illiberalism, and suggested remedies for the current, similar trend in the US.][antidote] Resist in the courts & media, and build a powerful social base at the state & city level throughout the country. The latter means

the Democratic Party must reconnect with the working class to preserve liberal institutions

Doing that means

Do not "on issues important to the active base only" such as "media freedom or democracy": this leads to "failures of mass mobilizations". Bonjour r/france !

Anthropic was supposed to be the good guy. It can’t be — unless government changes the incentives in the industry.

[L]ately, Anthropic has been in the headlines for less noble reasons: It’s pushing back on a landmark California bill to regulate AI. It’s taking money from Google and Amazon in a way that’s drawing antitrust scrutiny. And it’s being accused of aggressively scraping data from websites without permission, harming their performance.

It was supposed to be different from OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. In fact, all of Anthropic’s founders once worked at OpenAI but quit in part because of differences over safety culture there, and moved to spin up their own company that would build AI more responsibly.

An AI company may want to build safe systems, but in such a hype-filled industry, it faces enormous pressure to be first out of the gate. The company needs to pull in investors to supply the gargantuan sums of money needed to build top AI models, and to do that, it needs to satisfy them by showing a path to huge profits. Oh, and the stakes — should the tech go wrong

[L]ast week, the Socialist Campaign Group, the caucus of left-wing MPs set up by [Tony] Benn to keep alive the flame of his 1981 bid for the deputy leadership, was ready to relaunch itself into relevance in this new era of Labour hegemony. Partly inspired by The Squad of radical Democrats on Capitol Hill, what’s left of the parliamentary left had designs on a much closer relationship with the trade unions — and a programme of vigorous campaigns on the policies disavowed by Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves, but supported by the wider labour movement and (in their hearts and minds, if not their tweets and press releases) a lot of Labour MPs. Top of the list: the two-child benefit cap.

There goes another best-laid plan for Corbynite revival, crushed beneath the prime minister’s ploughshare. What he did to the Labour left this week is pretty much unprecedented. Seven MPs have lost the whip for at least six months and I would be surprised if all

Conlang Showcase: Ylmunusian

Introduction

Hi all, today I wanna present you my creation Ylmunusian. I've been working on it since 2013, when my previous large conlang died in the fires of a fried external harddrive. That said, back when I started with Ylmunusian my knowledge of conlanging and of where to find resources was... limited, let's say. So looking back now I'm fully aware that Ylmunusian is sorely lacking in some regards. At the same time, I wouldn't call it "bad" either. So yeah, if you wanna comment that certain things are not realistic or anything... knock yourself out but I'm well aware. Still, I'm proud of Ylmunusian, especially because of the scale as well as associated worldbuilding, and still work on it, mostly the vocabulary and translations. The grammar, from my point of view, is mostly "finished". That said, any feedback is still welcome and I will answer any questions below in the comments as quickly as I can get to it. If there's sufficient interest I can also share links to my online di

Even though the spreadsheet contains a complete AI language model, you can't chat with it like ChatGPT. Instead, users input words in other cells and see the predictive results displayed in different cells almost instantly. ... [L]anguage models like GPT-2 were designed to do next-token prediction, which means they try to complete an input (called a prompt, which is encoded into chunks called tokens) with the most likely text. The prediction could be the continuation of a sentence or any other text-based task, such as software code. Different sheets in Anand's Excel file allow users to get a sense of what is going on under the hood while these predictions are taking place.

"[L]iberalism expresses a skepticism about government[s] being able to “do good” for people. TL;DR The U.S. Federal Government is down to 13 days before Fiscal Year 2024 starts and has failed to pass a budget which results in a government shutdown. This would add the US to the list of governments struggling with various economic issues. A result could be renewed interest in assets that the government does not control or have influence on. Every single enforcement action that the SEC does related to crypto makes the news. Yes, there are some big names in the entertainment industry involved with crypto scams, but even Richard Hart (not his real name) made the news when action was taken against him. Very few people outside of crypto know who he is.

The media ignores when the SEC takes action against big banks.

Just last week the SEC took action against Citi Group and I did not hear a single thing about it in the media

As a result of the conduct described above, CGMI willfully2 violated the recordkeeping requirements of Section 17(a) of the Exchange Act and Rule 17a-3 thereunder, which r

Bitcoin mining stocks outperform BTC in 2023.

Bitcoin mining companies outperformed Bitcoin by a huge margin amid the recent bullish price action in the top cryptocurrency.

The average year-to-date stock price gains in 2023 among the top nine public Bitcoin mining firms by market capitalization stood at 257.14%. The figure is almost three times higher than Bitcoin’s gain in the same period.

The higher gains represent the leveraged beta effect that mining stocks enjoy. Leveraged beta suggests that during Bitcoin upside, these stocks outperform, whereas when Bitcoin slumps, they face deeper downside risk.

Due to its high leveraged beta, Bitcoin’s price performance will remain a crucial factor in d

Sci-Hub: Researchers Fight ISP Blocking

Sci-Hub: Researchers File Intervention Application To Fight ISP Blocking

Last December, academic publishers Elsevier, Wiley, and American Chemical Society filed a lawsuit demanding that Indian ISPs block access to Sci-Hub and Libgen for copyright infringement. The ongoing case now includes an intervention application from a group of social science researchers who say that blocking the platforms would result in a great societal loss to the country.

Assisted and represented by the Delhi-based Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF), a group of social science researchers affiliated with universities across Delhi has now filed an intervention application that aims to educate the High Court on the negative implications of ordering local ISPs to block the platforms.

“They have submitted that they cannot access countless essays/books/articles because of the exorbitant rates the publishers charge for them and that these publishers own more than 50% of the total output in social science research.
