The Gits - Second Skin

This is a 2024 remastered version with footage from the 1993 documentary Hype.

I only became aware of Seattle punk band, The Gits, because I was given a copy of the fundraising/tribute album Evil Stig to review for a low-level publication I was writing for. I can't remember anything that I wrote about it!

This was a few years after their untimely dissolution because of the gruesome murder of their lead singer, Mia Zapata.

The Clouds - Say It

yewtu.be Clouds - Say It

(HQ digital stereo remaster) The fifth Clouds video, and the only single from their second album "Octopus". Released 14 September 1992.

A classic of Australian, early 90s, indie rock. This is from an 8 track mini album called Octopus. Seek out their album Penny Century(1991). It’s terrific.

The Sundays - Goodbye Remastered 1080p

Great to see a good looking, HD version of this video.

I was minded to look it up today, after ordering a vinyl copy of a re-issue of The Sundays' debut album. The album that Goodbye is from came out a couple of years later and I still remember hearing it as the lead single and being completely floored by its sound; the guitars, lyrics, chord structure and that voice.

Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You

I'm only a casual observer of Screaming Trees, so I only really know this, their best known song, off the top of my head. It's a good one though. I have also listened to some of Mark Lanegan's (RIP) solo stuff.

Lush - For Love

Lush are a bit of a low-key fave of mine. Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins produced several of Lush's earlier records, including this one. It was off the album Spooky and was their first UK Top 40 single. They moved on from this dream pop/shoegaze sound to become aligned with the Britpop sound, later in the 90s. Although this stuff was still good, if I had to choose, I'd go for the earlier sound.

The autobiography that Lush's Miki Berenyi released last year is worth a read. It includes lots of stories about Britpop shenanigans, the Lollapalooza tour and so on.

This Car Climbed Mt. Washington

After Galaxie 500 split, Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang called themselves Pierre Etoile and then Damon & Naomi. It was under the latter name they released More Sad Hits, from which this track is taken. It's a slow burner that builds up into quite something.

Luna – Slash Your Tires

yewtu.be Luna - Slash Your Tires

Music video directed by Rocky Schenck, 1992 From the album Lunapark Recorded to Betamax in the 90s and transferred by Art & Steve

Luna - Slash Your Tires

After the dissolution of Galaxie 500, Dean Wareham went on to form Luna, or initially Luna2 because of a dispute with another band.

For some reason, their first album Lunapark, that Slash Your Tires is on, had an Australian vinyl pressing released by Summershine Records. The label was named after the record store that the label founder also ran. I used to buy records there; much of my early Shoegaze knowledge was picked up from hanging out there, and so I have a copy of it. Discogs tells me it's one of the more valuable pieces of vinyl I own, as apparently there was no other vinyl pressing made upon its original release.

Drop Nineteens - Winona

As an outlier in a largely British scene, it's said that Boston shoegazers, Drop Nineteens, were more popular in Europe than in their homeland.

Winona is from the 1992 debut album Delaware. A second album being released in 1993. Apparently, their third is coming out in November. I had a listen to the available track on Bandcamp and it's quite good!

Radiohead - Creep

cross-posted from: https://aussie.zone/post/2090297

LOL, I cannot believe that this hasn't been posted here already.

Here are my anecdotes regarding Radiohead…When the Pablo Honey album came out, It thought it was OK but eschewed the chance to see them play live, as I thought they were a bit of a one hit wonder…wrong. The friends who asked me to go, came back agog at the show. I got back on board with OK, Computer but mostly I can take or leave most of their discography.

Years later, I found myself living in Oxford and going to see gigs regularly at the place this video was filmed, The Venue, which had changed its name to The Zodiac. I also used to see Thom Yorke trundling his kid around in a pushchair and going to the supermarket.

Water Falls

My theme for the day is “Obscure Australian 90s bands that will only get 2 upvotes”.

This band from Sydney, who were active in the 1990s, would be one of my answers to the daily challenge about bands I wish were still together.

Theirs is an all too familiar tale. Supreme talent, GREAT songs and a modicum of success that ended all too soon after the death of singer/guitarist and songwriter, William Arthur.

There are at least 7 artists called Glide on Discogs, which makes their stuff quite hard to find on the internet. Here's the Discogs release page to help you tell them apart from the Echo and the Bunnymen side-project and all the others.

They put out 3 albums (1 posthumously) and number of EPs and singles. I always made a point of going to a Glide gig whenever they made the trip down the highway to Melbourne, so I must have seen them at least 10 times. Maybe more. I once interviewed them for a fanzine I was involved with.
