The Skittish Lizard
An Apex Short Story
-by Ninmast Nunyabiz-
“Morning, Leiza.”
Leiza was a quiet, mousey girl of petite size and frame that could often be found working the front desk at the precinct office. She was good at paperwork and never forgot a memo. Her soft tone and quick-to-care attitude soothed many irate citizens’ tempers even over the phone.
She was a Frellian, but could have almost passed for human, were it not for her yellow sclera, slitted pupils and a frame of face that was just a little too pointed to avoid being uncanny. There was also her seemingly thick, heavy hair, which hung long and brown.
Of course, the reason the hair was so odd was b

Uncle Kaz held up a subtle hand to her as he interrupted the Pinigaran. “Prince Chaskal, that is the second time today that I have heard you mention – ominously – about ‘what we fear may be to come,’ if I may paraphrase a bit. It is the core reason you h

Log Entry 001 – Observer T’lerrn of the Xiiraxi Conclave Vessel: Human Exploration Ship Dauntless
Location: Terran Orbit, Sol System
Assignment: Cultural Observation – Initial Departure Protocols
Cycle: 1 – Local Time: 0433 UTC
I have begun my formal duties as Cultural Observer aboard the Terran vessel Dauntless, the first of their long-range exploration ships to incorporate multi-species personnel under the Pan-Galactic Accord.
The humans refer to this as a “joint venture.”
I was not prepared.
The bridge of the Dauntless is unorthodox—both in layout and atmosphere. It is less a command chamber and more a communal den: cluttered with personal artefacts, decorated wit

Julia looked around the elevator which had been disguised by a wall in an ally near the previous Prime Minister's favorite bar. I have to agree with Mom about all the cloak-and-dagger crap, especially since I seem to have found myself eyeballs-deep in it. Family curse, or curse of the job? Probably a combo thing.
Dad gave Mom a wry smile and started to speak, but the elevator doors opened and

After a few moments of silence, Omsarch continued. “I will peruse whatever you send me about your dragons, but I suspect I’ll find a lot in the way of parallels. There

World History
An Apex Short Story
-by Ninmast Nunyabiz-
“History’s for historians to remember,” the drunken cry popped off from Sedhit, who was decrying the injustice of his son’s low test scores on the subject. “It’s in their job title and everything! Let them keep track of it and only bother the rest of us with it when it’s necessary!”
Of course, Sedhit was a Sciuri, an outstanding species among those who joined the Union Defenders for their great agility, propensity for mission preparedness and extremely fluffy, very large tails. Their quick thinking, knack for having whatever supplies are needed and reputation for being the last ones to run out made them both great

Julia forced herself to remain still and watched the scene play out before her. The absurdity of it made a part of her want to laugh, but she didn't dare so much a smile. I had been in charge of the "Assault Hamster" project for quite a while. The little buggers were by their nature aggressive, self sacrificing, and incredibly food motivated. In other words, the perfect soldier. Sadly they were only 4 inches tall, which limited their battlefield application, or so we thought.
Early prototypes were used to cross no-man's land and plant listening devices or flag mines for detonation. No-man's land was not a safe place for full sized humans and the attrition rate among my tiny combatants was horrible. Yet somehow their... fecundity ensured there would always be replacements for the losses. It was more the negligible cost of upkeep more than any battle field success tha

The Price of Existence
The planet of Veyna had always burned.
For as long as the Veynari could remember, the great Fire Season had been an immutable fact of life. Every cycle, the dry winds would rise, and the forests would ignite in great rolling infernos. The skies would turn orange, the rivers would boil, and the land would be reshaped by flame.
It was the price of existence.
The elders spoke of it with reverence. The young prepared for it with resignation. The strong built their homes in the fire-resistant caves, while the weak perished or fled to charred lands that would, in time, bloom anew.
The cycle was endless. It was natural.
Then the Humans arrived.

Off the Rails
An Apex Short Story
-by Ninmast Nunyabiz-
Union trains always run on time. This is thanks to a network of artificial intelligences that monitor the state of all rails and cars at all times. This being the Galactic Union, and artificial intelligences being considered sapient beings on par with any organic citizen, they aren’t slaved to the processes. In fact, they work a normal daily shift like anyone else.
The railways have actually grown to use them as mascots for their respective stations, and the girls and boys of the Union railways take pride in both their service and administrative duties. One artificial intelligence once descr
