"Basketball isn't played on a spreadsheet!"
Well, what if it was?
2 years ago (during the 2023 offseason), I made a post breaking down how the basketball simulation website WhatIfSports values NBA players in a fictional league where every player in history is available, using a 5-year window of players’ careers.
I posted an update not long ago, but a regular season of our biggest league just finished so I’m updating this with new findings and thoughts.
The site: WhatIfSports is a site that takes every season of every player ever, and lets you build team with those player seasons. It then runs their real-life

To start off we need to estimate how many airballs Russel Westbrook has shot in his career. This actually turned out to be a lot harder than I initially assumed. I tried watching a few random games, but this proved to be too inaccurate and too small of a sample size to make realistic judgements. Lucky for me, however, I found an airball compilation of Westbrook in his first season as a Laker.
In that compilation, he shot 13 airballs, and at the time, the Lakers had played 42 games, and Westbrick had shot 679 field goal attempts. This gives us an airball rate of
13/679=1.91%
We'll round this down to 1.9%. However, Westbrook hasn't always been this bad of a shooter.

The NBA offseason is always filled with exciting storylines like star free agents and blockbuster trades.
But rather than dwell on the obvious, this series intends to do the opposite: focus on the lower-profile free agents who may have some value to teams. No NBA player is actually "99 Cents," of course, but these are all players who may be bargains based on their perceived market.
This "99 Cent Store" series has been open for business since 2018. In the past, we've highlighted reserves like Fred VanVleet and Isaiah Hartenstein among others prior to their breakouts. Not all of the items turn out to be gems, but the returns have been mostly positive so far. Let's

TL;DR: Luka Doncic’s offensive performance increases and his defensive performance decreases by a statistically significant margin in the 5 games following a new season of Overwatch 2.
Background
In addition to being a 5-time NBA All Star and last year’s scoring champion, Luka Doncic is also an elite Overwatch 2 player who at one point reached the top 500 ranked worldwide on Tank.
Given that competitive OW2 gameplay could have impacts on NBA performance that are both positive (hand eye coordination, quick decision making, teamwork) and negative (sleep deprivation, eye strain, wrist pain, more easily tilted), I analyzed Luka’s performance before and a

Mavs double Giannis to get the ball out of his hands.
They do a near perfect rotation to get back to their assignments. Anti-clockwise rotation.
Dante Exum is a bit slow spotting his assignment. Doesn't matter, Bucks don't know wtf they're doing.
1 successful stop.
Naji Marshall hedges the PnR.
Watch Kyrie here. See how he's looking to rotate on Dame:
A little foreshadowing for what's to come.
Pass inside to Giannis. Giannis gets TRIPLED TEAMED.
Kyrie is slow on the rotation he initally intended to make. Dame cooks him.
Pass inside to Giannis. ANOTHER TRIPLED TEAMED.
Brook Lopez hits the floater. Might as well be a wide open floater, as Giannis is getting trip

(This post will focus on Trae Young as I’m a Hawks fan but I think it shouldn’t be lost on anyone that two of the best playmakers of this generation have never had an All-Star teammate while they were also on the roster.)
As an aforementioned Hawks fan, I’ve watched and appreciated Trae Young since he's stepped foot into the league. Watching last night's game v. the Miami Heat where his starting teammates were a 19-year old rookie, a 21-year old defensive stalwart with a shaky (but growing!) offensive game, a player who was in the G-League last month and making his 7th career NBA start, and an undersized but decent center, Trae Young has rarely had the h

The Academy Award nominations were announced last week, leaving some NBA players feeling left out. To help give them some love, we're awarding the trophies for the best performances of the 2024-25 season so far.
BEST PERFORMANCE in a SUPPORTING ROLE
The actual Oscars for "Best Supporting Actor" and "Actress" may go to Kieran Culkin (for A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldana (for Emilia Perez) -- two roles that were arguably the leads of their movies.
Instead, we should try to find true SUPPORTING roles, wherein a player sacrifices their stats and ego for the good of the te

I recently analysed regular-season data from 1996 to 2024 to explore the NBA’s greatest unassisted scoring streaks—where players continue scoring without receiving a single assisted basket. This post examines the biggest names, highlights the key stats, and shows how these streaks evolved over time.

Every so often, we come across a tweet or a post on this sub stating "Player XYZ is the first to score A pts with B rebounds and C assists".
These statistics, as interesting as they are, beg the question; how unique is any given box score in the context of the history of the NBA, and better yet, what are some achievable unique box scores that have yet to be achieved?
Using NBA API, I dug into all player box scores since the 1990 season, and looked to answer these questions. I'm currently collecting data going back to the inception of the NBA, perhaps I'll edit in the new values later on.
Before answering this question, let's look

The Hawks are currently riding a five-game win streak that included consecutive wins against the league-leading Cleveland Cavaliers and a victory in Milwaukee that stopped the Bucks’ own seven-game streak.
It’s an impressive stretch, but the crazy part? They’re doing it with defense.
Since November 26th, the start of this five-game winning streak (including three games against elite offenses, mind you), the Hawks rank[third](https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/league/fourfactors?season=2024&seasontype=regseason&start=11/26/2024&a

In the NBA, we tend to list "scoring titles" -- and all statistical leaders -- on a per game basis. (Provided they meet a minimum threshold of games.) That stands in contrast to other sports. In the NFL, the year's leading rusher is the running back with the most yards over the course of the season (not per game). In baseball, the home run leader has the most over the course of the season (not per game).
There are pros and cons to each method. It feels like we've been accustomed to "per game" in the NBA -- and those numbers are easier to visualize and digest. At the same time, it may slightly

Hey r/nba,
Long time NBA fan + subreddit member here, posting on my new-ish personal account. Been on r/nba since 2011! I just created a free Chrome extension for NBA fans that makes it easy to visualize and compare players career stats, and I wanted to share it with everyone here.
Using Visual Stats to compare LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry's career statistics.
Why I built this:
I love both basketball and the NBA, but one thing that's always frustrated me as a basketball fan in the Internet age is how most webs

To begin, a bricked shot is essentially any attempt that clanks off the backboard or rim without going in. There's no official statistic measuring that, so I decided to pick 5 random games where he shot a lot and use that as a baseline percentage. It's not perfect, but it's the best we can realistically do.
After those 5 games, I determined that 29.96% of Westbrook's misses were bricks. Westbrook has missed 11,604 shots in his career. 0.2996 11,604 = 3,476.5584, which we'll round down to 3,476.
There are at least 10 different brick sizes, but we are going to go with a standard modular brick - 3 5/8" x 7 5/8" x 2 1/4". We are going to plan for 7 bricks per sq. ft.
