Manga Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion Thread [Week 15]

Previous Thread | Next Thread

Hey everybody! April Fool's is behind us and hopefully you survived relatively unscathed. Here is a new weekly general thread that you can use to talk about any kind of manga or manga-adjacent topics that might be on your mind.

Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).

Hey all, bit of a meta update. Currently there are ongoing issues with federation between lemmy.world and ani.social (as well as a bunch of other instances that are falling behind .world). Currently, ani.social is about 9 hours behind world in federation activities. However, the reverse isn't true. Activities on ani.social are federating out to world promptly like normal. So, it is entirely possible that community members on lemmy.world might see things like duplicate posts that no other members of the community might see.

Going forward, this issue should resolve itself. The root cause actually comes down to a couple different bugs combining for a worst-case scenario. The flood of activity that world is federating out is being caused by a bug in kbin in which some users' actions are being repeatedly performed over and over again, much faster than instances can process those actions. Combining this flood of activity with a bug in lemmy in which federation activities are sensitive to small increases in latency between servers yields an issue in which instances that are not geographically close to lemmy.world (in Finland), are unable to keep up.

I am not a dev by trade, but have been lurking in the matrix channels where these issues have been discussed. The good news is that lemmy.world has temporarily blocked traffic from kbin.social in order to stem the tide. However, this essentially prevents kbin users from interacting with the largest lemmy instance which is not ideal.

In any case, just wanted to update people on why some weird things have been happening the past day or so.

  • I have been doing a lot of traveling this past week and haven't had too much of a chance to read things. I picked out a couple of random series that I tried, but nothing really stuck:

    • Houkago no Honya-san - A 4-koma manga about an elementary school girl that helps her grandfather run an adult book store. I tried a couple chapters, but the humor wasn't really landing for me.
    • Hajimete no Ojou-sama - Probably the most promising of the series I tried out this week. About a rich ojou-sama (literally named Ojou) that doesn't know how the world works and a fellow high school boy that she has decided should be the person to teach her the ways of the world. Only four chapters in, it shows promise, but I feel like the joke might get old quick.
    • Gal Yome no Himitsu - A gal OL that is married to a drab coworker (against regulation) in which they need to keep their marriage a secret. I got a couple chapters in this and it had its moments, but wasn't really connecting with me. Some credit for being centered around an adult relationship at least.
    • The Villainess Just Wants To Live In Peace! - This one is Korean and is only two chapters in, so I don't think the main premise has really been established yet. So far, it feels like a bit more serious version of Bakarina.

The final thing I wanted to mention this week is that I have dove back in time a bit and been working my way through an older, finished series that I have been enjoying; namely, Shinryaku! Ika Musume. I haven't made it any secret how huge a fan I am of Atsumare! Fushigi Kenkyu-bu. Ika Musume is the author's previous work and it has a very similar sense of humor. I had previously started working through it, but I picked it back up this past week and am currently ~1/3 the way through the series now.
