I'm sure this will be unpopular but I don't give a shit about internet points.
I'm a liberal gun owner and I've long been appalled at the complete lack of training required to purchase such destructive tools. The military requires you to go through far more training than this bill does before you touch a weapon. And that's because you need to know what the hell you're doing. Why is it different for the public when it's almost exactly the same weapon? I think this is a step in the right direction.
I believe the training requirement will virtually eliminate people with mental health issues getting their hands on these weapons through legal channels. Is it perfect, no, but letting perfect be the enemy of good is how we get stagnation.
- To get this training in CO, you have to apply for a permit first. And your county sheriff can deny you for any reason. So yeah, they can make sure only white people get modern guns. The training wouldn't be so bad if it was completely free, made available all over the state so rural people could do it, available everyday so poorer people don't have to take a day off of work, and if you pass you pass. None of this denying for any reason. Oh, and it needs to be offered in multiple languages. If there's a live fire portion, it can't be more difficult than what cops have to do.
  But we all know that won't happen. This is just a way to make sure only the right looking people can get a gun.
  
  All good points and that's why I said it's not perfect. But Colorado does have a "shall issue" directive for CWP's and I haven't heard of any issues with that over the years. I myself have had one for 20+ years and renewals in different counties without issue. I would think they would continue the "shall issue" policy for this as well. Most Colorado Sheriffs are Red.
  
  And for those of us who's county sheriff won't? The state already said they don't know what the required training will be. This particular law has so many issues. The new permitting system (that you have go through before you're allowed to take the class) has to be ran and funded by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, who is already severely underfunded already. The law says they don't get any extra funding, and that the permits will pay for the system. But a Colorado Open Records Act revealed that they already predicted there will not be enough permits to take a class to fund the system. This law in particular is not about preventing gun violence and other crimes.
  In CO, we already have to pay a sin tax on parts, ammo, and guns, on top of the sales tax and federal excise tax. ~~All that tax money~~ The sin tax money goes to a fund that can be used to fund mental health services for veterans, but most of it has to fund school security. Aka, cops.
  I don't believe at all this law is about preventing violence, when all it does is add a big financial barrier to lawful firearm ownership. If you steal a gun in Colorado, unless it's a real fancy one, it's just a misdemeanor.
  
  I understand where you’re coming from. Used to feel the same. But now I just think my right to walk into Bobs Bait Shack and Firearms and buy a rifle is worth less than people’s right to not be shot on the street or in school by people our mental health system has failed.
  Everyone will come down on a different side of that. But I think it’s a good discussion.
  
  I just don't see how making lawful gun ownership more expensive prevents bad people from doing bad things with guns.
  
  Raising the bar for entry makes it harder for everyone to do anything with a gun. I just dont care if "good" people are affected, because there is no societal good from them having a gun. There is a societal good from preventing bad people from getting a gun, and if good people have to be affected as well so be it. Get a new hobby if this ones too expensive.
  
  This raises the bar for lawful gun ownership. It doesn't even prevent bad people from getting a gun. It doesn't stop violence from occurring. The law makes 0 attempts to prevent stealing a gun(which is a misdemeanor in CO unless it's worth over $1000), or to prevent crime. It just creates a financial barrier for those who want to legally own a gun. If you're a minority or LGBTQ, lawful gun ownership isn't just a hobby. For some of us it's literally survival. Especially with people disappearing from our streets. Maybe you don't look like an illegal immigrant. Maybe you look like someone whom the cops will always aid. If that's the case, good for you. But a lot of Americans don't have those kind of privileges. It wasn't that long ago that black men had shoot to members of the Klan.
  
  Okay I'll buy it, how much is your monthly defense bill? Running through guns and ammo like crazy? Or do you just need to buy a single gun and a box of ammo? And like you said stealing a gun is trivial, right? Noones ever been priced out of a gun, and legal prices never affect black market prices, right?
  
  It has nothing to do with the expense, it's the training. I agreed with you that the training should be free.
  
  I thought the point of the right to bear arms was about freedom. If you need consent from a sheriff and it's based on their feelings, it's giving them freedom to take rights away.
  Don't get me wrong, I'm not a US citizen and guns are banned here, but the main reason for it seems to be playing out, and taking those freedoms away could be massively dangerous. More so than the threat of gun violence right now. How could any opposition defend themselves being shipped off to El Salvador en masse if a secretary of state things you contradict foreign policy goals?
  
  It’s interesting to see this post and you’re comment because just recently I was thinking about how I’d gladly give up guns and my 2nd amendment right if it meant we could have gun control and gun crime similar to that of the UK or Japan instead of what we have today.
- Fundamentally, I agree, but I can't trust this or any government to actually implement such a system of arms control and not exploit it to cynically disarm political opponents.
  
  On that we agree but I'm so tired of the constant torrent of gun violence that I'm ready to start trying anything that might help.
  
  Awesome, but what that means is that we need to disarm the police and governmental forces first.

- California is an example why this isn't good. In some counties, you're only getting a permit if youre friends with the good ole boy sheriff.
  Which basically translates to no armed minorities.
